BTS - “HIP HOP PHILE” | Extended Reaction! (Live Performances + J&J Musical Adventure)

WATCH HERE

WELCOME…to the HIP HOP LOVER’S FEST! 😉

Today's reaction video is a continuation of a reaction video that we posted on our YouTube channel, where we listen to BTS’ “Hip Hop Lover” for the first time! If you haven't already seen that video, go check it out now and then come back. We'll be waiting for you…

https://youtu.be/wzSVsBPY-zI

We relish any opportunity we get to share some of our own hip-hop inspirations…and today, BTS has provided us with the perfect opportunity to do so.

Learning about the rap line’s hip-hop inspirations has made us appreciate each of them 10000000x more than we already do (if this is even possible).

In expert fashion…RM, J Hope & Suga have penned a comprehensive, heartfelt, and authentic LOVE LETTER to hip-hop.

Thinking back to the riddle that we left you all with last week…was anybody able to guess any of the songs hidden within? (HINT: each line contains references to 2 songs)

- Throughout history, many men have asked the question “Why?”

- "Why is it so hard to maintain a natural smile when the world keeps killing our vibe?”

- "Why, in America, is it possible to go from the rags of West Philly to the riches of Uncle Philly?”

We hope you all enjoyed today’s reaction! Let us know about your own hip-hop inspirations (songs, artists, etc.) in the comments below!

ARMY, as always, we truly appreciate your love and support (WE’LL CONTINUE SAYING THIS UNTIL THE END OF TIME). Your subscription allows us to produce higher-quality reaction videos, and moves us closer to our goal of doing this full-time! Let us know if you have any questions, feedback, thoughts, etc. at any time! BORAHAE!! 💜💜

I loved hip hop fest. I grew up with a lot of this music and now you guys put me onto more 💜💜💜

shanna yusingco

💜💜

Princilla

This was so much fun! I loved the music and loved watching you both really get into it. Thank you for sharing this with us. I look forward to the R&B Fest! 💜

Cassandra

Thank you so much 😊😊

BTS - Jared & Jordan

YESSS we are right there with you.

BTS - Jared & Jordan

Re-watching this as it totally brings out my memories of my earlier years coz of the hiphop music! (I feel so old, yes) 😩

J-Lee

Thank you for the video. I absolutely loved it. I really appreciated you sharing your your stories with us. I haven’t heard some of those songs in so long. Some of the songs I’ve never heard either so I enjoyed the introduction of those songs. I especially loved hearing the Will Smith tribute song and the remix. That was hella cool. Will Smith definitely spit in that remix too. I definitely hope you both do an R&B fest. I would love to see that. I can’t wait. Once again, thank you for another great video. 💜 P.S. I love both your smiles and they are both beautiful! 😊

Rheichel Tormis

Thank you Jared and Jordan. This was a very refreshing reaction. I must admit that I was unfamiliar with “Hip Hop Phile,” so thank you for that. I must admit that I was more a fan of hip-hop in my younger years. I am now more pop, R&B, Soft rock and country. I also thank you for showing us the hip hop staples in your life at certain times of your life, it was very interesting and I really appreciated that. Great job Jordan!!! Also thank you Jordan for introducing me to “Crooked Smile.” I’m going through some personal things at the moment and your words together with that song was very inspiring. Thank you Jarad for introducing me to Joyner. I’ve never heard of him until now. Jordan you took the words right out of my mouth. I cannot wait for an R&B version. Thank you both so much as usual. Borahae!

Precious Lafleur

This was so fun. Im more of a R&B girl than a hip hop girl. Alicia Keys is my queen. Her album, Songs in a Minor guided me in the beginning of my adulthood. A Woman's Worth is my power song. I was also able to watch her in concert when she came to Singapore. This whole video brought me back to that period of my life.

Shalia

This was so fun! I added all the songs to my playlist which I can be picky about. I look forward to the RnB version! And honestly, it's a huge compliment to add BTS to the list of names like Kendrick, J.Cole etc (even though I agree they deserve to be there).

Jen Roe⁷

Born in 1969 in Germany, I was influenced mostly by english (and german) pop&rock music like Michael Jackson, Prince, David Bowie, Tears For Fears, Duran Duran. Especially U2 were my preferred group during my teenage years in the 80s (not so much in the 90s). Later I loved Nirvana and Linkin Park. My first point of contact with rap/hiphop was in 2011, when I discovered the music of Ed Sheeran. (Fun Fact: On 'Percussion To Dance' and 'Make it right' he collaborated with BTS.) But I really began to understand rap/hiphop when BTS found me in 2021. Especially the Cyphers and Sugas/August Ds Songs hit me in my heart.

Anja⁷

Love your reactions as always. I saw Moving On in the end card of the last hip hop lover performance you watched & I can't wait until you guys hear that (it's one of my all time favorites). Also enjoyed the hip hop fest 💜

jordyn perry

Love getting to know you like this. Thank you for opening up and sharing your music inspirations. I totally get it, when Jordan mentioned letting his anger out by listening to songs like 50 Cent’s Many Men. Sometimes you just need to hear people say things that you feel but can’t express naturally. I’ll need to go listen to J. Cole’s procrastination again. It’s calling my name 😏

Ellysa Vaj

The way y’all were rapping bar for bar during the hip hop feast fest was amazing 🤣🤣🔥🔥 All the songs you guys recommend or sidetrack into are always fire and I love to see your excitement with each and every one of them. Honestly that’s exactly how I be when I’m listening to throwbacks 😂 Great choice of songs yall, I love it💜💜 I’m definitely gonna be looking into Joyner Lucas 🔥

Steph

In 1990 I was practically glued to my WalkMan and all I would play was Ice Cube's first solo album, Amerikkka's Most Wanted. I can still recite all of the lines to Once Upon a Time in the Projects. Now I do NOT outwardly appear to be that song's target audience! But, that song spoke to me because of Cube's lyricism, his storytelling and - of course - that bass-y beat. And from Walkman to Wifi, I still adore Ice Cube to this day.

Tiffany1013

remember to bring your light Sticks it might be sync with the performance on screen

leat

I enjoyed it very much, thanks 🙏I added two songs to my playlist thanks to you. I would loooove to see a R‘n‘B special, because I used to dance to R‘n‘B and hip hop. Off the top of my head, I can think of songs like Paradise, Love Maze and Home by BTS, Jungkook’s solo My Time and Singularity by V that have R‘n‘B influences. I love all of them!

Amiii

I was just listening to The Isley Brothers, Sade and Luther Vandross (what a loss) the other day. I’m jumping out of my skin at the thought of Jared’s R&B fest. That will be epic! 💜🇨🇦

Cheryl ⁷ Lambert

Wow. All of this is inspiring for me to try to check out. 💜💜

Cheryl ⁷ Lambert

omg I wondered when I could watch/ listen to this and I‘m gonna use your idea. Heading to the gym now. 🥰

Kiki

💜💜💜

Kiki

Dani that is my favorite performance of Pied Piper. Eveytime JK meets the camera he seduces us with his eyes.....wheew!!!

LizP⁷⁷⁷⁷⁷⁷⁷

If you loved this then I can't wait till you get to their song We On! The raps and vocals are sooo good in this. And definitely old school hip hop feel.

lyndsey

I enjoyed this sooo much. I watched it while at the gym let me tell you 700 steps in the 20 mints into the video that's how pumped I was 💜💜💜

Kirssy Mago

Since you both have been listening to more rap line songs one I would recommend is Tear the outro for the album love yourself tear. Now not to make you too excited but personally it is even more insane than Ddaeng… YEP. Also the live is even better somehow, *especially the outfits* the rap line is soo🔥🔥🔥. It will shock you, I PROMISE it feels so unreal listening to it, Love you both and I can’t wait till you both will be fluent in Korean.

Julez

You are so correct about BTS making you feel present while in concert. I was lucky enough to attend their first concert back after the pandemic in LA and it was so special. That night, I felt free, happy, with absolutely no worries except one. My one worry was that I knew the night would end. Nonetheless, that night was so special, and it changed me! It made me realize that I just wanted to pursue happiness. The amount of happiness I felt that night, I wanted to experience more frequently and that is what I’m striving to live by! Such an honor to attend a bts concert, and I hope you both get the chance to attend one after 2025 when they come back to group activities💜

Yeritza

Fun video. Love adding new music to my playlist.

Sharebear

AHHHHHH NO WAY YALL PLAYED JADAKISS MY MAN WAS SLEPT ON FOR YEARS LMAOOOO. I grew up on classic old school hip hop/rap and its obviously changed since then, but isn't it amazing how the genre can change and still be relevant? Thats the true beauty to it. Love that the boys have paid their due respect to it. I probably would've chosen N.Y State of Mind by Nas, Monster by Kanye, and All Night by BTS x Juice World if i had to choose :)

Les

That was a cool reaction thank you I would say for me the hip hop tracks that mark my life are: *childhood : Fugees- Fu-gee-la I grew up a lot on French rap because I'm French, but otherwise I'd say maybe this one because, we had the CD playing at home and just like you one of the few songs that stood the test of time and is still on my playlist! *2010s: Dre, Anderson. Paak, Kendrick- Deep Water It was part of Dr Dre's last album Compton that served as the soundtrack for the biopic on N.W.A and that movie really reignited my love for hip hop and that track is just CRAAAZY. *2020s: Pharrell, Travis Scott- Down in Atlanta For the past 5 years, very little hip hop songs stuck out to me, the 1st and most recent one that I can think of rn is that one, the baseline is genius!!

Maëva

At this point, I think I just need you guys’ playlists lolI. But anyways, love love this reaction. I loved seeing how much the songs you both picked hit y’all. I hadn’t listened to some of these songs in a while too and definitely went and added them to my playlist. I gotta look into Joyner Lucas as well cuz I haven’t listened to his music maybe like 2/3 songs but Will was such a good song, I have to hear more. Thank you for this. It was a perfect idea. Much love and support to you both always 💜

Loved this reaction and really loved your personal touches. Thank you for allowing us a peak into your world. Its so much nicer to be on this journey with friends....

Tanya G

This was amazing! Ya'll took us on a whole journey and I enjoyed it so much <3

Alishea

LOVED THIS!!❤️ I will be adding all of these songs to my playlist!

bts

I’m 29 now and I’m from the Netherlands. I only discovered (American) Hip Hop in my early teens. Lil Wayne is and will always be an artist that will be in my top 3 favorite artits. Right above it FT. Drake and Mirror FT. Bruno Mars are my favorite songs of his. Loved seeing your passion in this video!

Freek Stap

A thought just came to me when Jared mentioned how BTS leaves what they are feeling, demons etc on that stage making the audience be present- that is so true. You will really see all these when you get to watch and react to Burn the stage series. It is such a good source of info on BTS being raw and showing us what happens behind the stage and the professionalism they show when they are back on stage leaving their fatigue, the arguments, and their worries behind so they can as you said make the audience be present for the entire show.

RhadAnne

You guy should definitely drop your Spotify @‘s. Loved this video :))

Hip Hop Essay Incoming! (this is gonna be a loooong comment, apologies in advance) I'm actually typing this up on my laptop and i took notes with pen & paper while watching the video! I had that 50 Cent album when I was growing up too! I probably still remember every word of it, haha. So I grew up in a hip-hop, r&b, (and rock/metal household). N.W.A., Busta Rhymes, Cypress Hill, Wu-Tang Clan, Gang Starr, Luniz, KRS-One, Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, Snoop and then eventually Eminem, 50 Cent, Nelly, Ja Rule, Ludacris, Lil Wayne, Outkast (honestly i could go on and on and on..) MAN there's so SO MUCH music i want to share with you and see your reactions too. I thoroughly loved learning each of your 3 choices. And i was screaming because during each reveal i was proud of myself for knowing ALL OF THEM (yay me!) also great choices. I especially love Crooked Smile, i think the collab with TLC was so well thought out because the song reflects the theme that a lot of TLC's music was all about. Joyner Lucas is one of my all time favorite artists. Whenever anyone asks who my favorite rappers I always say Joyner and Tech N9ne. I'm gonna do what you guys did and give you three songs! 1: my childhood - Break ya Neck by Busta Rhymes I remember the first time I heard that song, I had NEVER heard someone rap that fast! I think I was 9 when I heard it and my eyes were just WIDE the whole time. and the beat is LEGENDARY!!! 2: my "teens" - Imma Tell by Tech N9ne now the album this is on came out in 2002 but i wasn't introduced to tech until i was around 13 (in 2005). This was the first song I heard by him and it was just so DIFFERENT and he's another insanely fire spitting dragon of a legend to me. like he gets so fast it makes me dizzy sometimes lmao 3: my 20's - I Need Help by Hopsin this one came out in 2013 when i was 21 and HOLY. this song sticks so hard with me because he raps about how he struggles with 'getting big' and his depression and how it makes him feel crazy. "the world made me feel like i lost myself, my own homies tellin me that i need help, if you got a solution for me you should probably holla at ya boy if you know somebody" since i'm 30 now i could probably do a more recent song but i feel like i've rambled for too long. :3 I still listen to all the artists I listed above but *some* other ones are Childish Gambino, Tyler the Creator, Kendrick, J Cole, Juice Wrld, and Logic. Ending note: I would literally PAY you to listen to Worldwide Choppers by Tech N9ne. It's a collab/group of some of the FASTEST and SKILLED rappers I have ever heard in my life. it's seriously mind blowing and i can just picture your reaction to it loooool. the spitting is insanity. it's.. very explicit though so maybe just listen to it in your free time and let me know hahahaha also i vote hell yes on a future r&b lovers fest! thank you so much for this, it was an absolute treat. much love!

Jenna B.

My bro and I were the only mixed kids growing up in our town in rural southern England in the 80s so our black dad played us world music like Fela Kuti, ladysmith black mambazo and reggae and our white mum was into rock and ballads… I think this led me to blues, hip hop and metal and with hip hop I loved great flows, intelligent thoughtful political lyrics or just phat beats… I learned to rap to beastie boys, Jurassic 5, wu tang clan, jeru tha damaja, and now I love Sa Roc the MC, BTS rapline got me into k-hop too and there’s a lot going on in Korea that’s really good, musically.

Aylaᴿᵖʷᵖ

I just listened to it...all I could do was shake my head because it doesn't make any sense to be as great as J. Cole!🔥🔥🔥

LIBBY WILSON

I'm with you guys until the end of this reaction. This has been an amazing journey down the rabbit hole to the BU. Remembering the OGs of Hip-hop and learning about the new rappers. I'm learning to innerstand walking the walk and talking the talk in a Hip-hop kinda way. WOW!!! BORAHEA 💜

LIBBY WILSON

I am enjoying this breakdown. To see how many of the OGs they listened to warmed my heart. I'm not gonna say much cuz other ARMY members have so eloquently stated how I feel. Love all you guys (BTS, ARMY, and J&J)

LIBBY WILSON

Cole's new song was fire 🔥

Katherine Cordero

Sounds like you’re just a hair too young to have been there for the late 80s / early 90s. If you want to get into old hip hop with those influences, start with Public Enemy, Rage against the Machine, Beastie Boys. 😊

Eitan

You mentioned so many of my favorites!!!

LizP⁷⁷⁷⁷⁷⁷⁷

As always I enjoy watching your videos. I was singing along with your picks. I am a bit older than you 2 so I remember when Rappers Delight came out. Like some of BTS's influences I have seen NAS, JAY-Z, and Epik High in concert along with a few others like 50 cent, Petey Pablo, DMX, Method Man and Redman, Coolio and Jordan, Drake at the O2 Arena in London. There are many more that I saw just as their careers were getting started. TUPAC and Jeezy I would say are my top 2. Thank you for making 3 of my days out of the week better. As for a request I would love to have you react to Pied Piper. It is one of my favorites. I have watched the video too many times and will watch it many more. https://youtu.be/jBELVvg51Og

Dani Ellison

Thanks for putting these videos together guys!! I absolutely loved hearing your choices. Although I can honestly admit I never heard any of those songs, I loved J. Cole's. The music on the last one took me back to that soulful funky r n b that I grew up listening to. My hip hop dates back to mid 80's and 90's like LL Cool J, Run DMC, Lighter Shade of Brown (a Chicano hip hop group) Ghetto Boyz, Tupac, Biggie, Ice Cube, Dre, Snoop, Bone Thugzz, and some early Jay Z. I CANNOT WAIT for Jared's R n B fest cuz thats my music right there!! Artists like Luther Vandross, Keith Sweat, Al B. Sure, The Isley Brothers, Jodeci, Babyface, TLC, SWV, Sade. A huge part of my listening preference in my childhood/teen/young adult hood was Latin Freestyle like artists such as Lisa Lisa, Cynthia, Coro, George Lamond, Safire, Cover Girls, TKA etc. I still go to freestyle shows they have around here every other month or so. Now I pretty much just listen to BTS, kpop, salsa and bachata music. I love all music and everyday I learn new things so thank you for opening my ears to some jams I'll be adding to my playlist 🙂💜💜

LizP⁷⁷⁷⁷⁷⁷⁷

That was fascinating! I've never heard those songs. My teens were: Echo & the Bunnymen, Devo, Human League, Bow Wow Wow, Sex Pistols. 20s: Bell Canto, INXS, Modern English, ABC, Clan of Xymox, Pet Shop Boys. 30s: Counting Crows, Dave Mathew, Johnny Clegg & Savuka, Anna Domino. 40s: Dixie Chicks, Nara Leao, AR Rahman, Youssou N'Dour, Yoyo Ma. 50s: Bollywood everything and then BTS. So my music journey has been all over the place. Thanks for sharing your journey with us.

Kecia ⁷

I'm just coming over from the YouTube video so will probably end up commenting again after watching this one. But something I love about this song is how it shows Namjoon's, Hobi's, and Yoongi's individual relationship with hip hop. They all love it. But Joon studied it, learned it inside out from the roots of the genre. Hobi felt it, was inspired by the movement it generated within him. Yoongi lived it (part of why he doesn't name drop in his verse, in my opinion. While I'm sure he had role models, but his inspiration was the genre and music itself.). Mind, body, and soul - they each love and experience music differently and it's such a beautiful thing to be witness to.

I am also having trouble playing the video. I will try again tomorrow.

Thank you very much, I'm very excited 🥺

LOVE your musical taste! 😊💜

BTS - Jared & Jordan

it works now 🥺

fran

I never really listened to hip hop heavily at any point in my life. but this did make me think about what my music taste looked like through childhood, teens and 20s. Childhood was r&b like erica badu, whitney houston, lauren hill, kirk franklin; teens Green day Linkin park, Gorillaz, Daft Punk; 20s Christian rock, Logic, general pop. Now in my 30s kpop (BTS, TXT, Enhypen, Stray kids, Monsta X, Jackson wang)

Mariah P

Loved these reactions and learning about some of your guys' favorite/impactful songs!💜

DanielleM

Good night from Germany Jared & Jordan! It is almost 2.30pm here and I just finished the video and i had to comment :) I was born and raised in Germany in 1982. So I got to know hip hop in the 90's e.g. Kriss Kross - Jump, Snow - Informer, but my favorites were rather Luniz - I Got Five On It, 2Pac ft. Dr. Dre - California Love etc. Later I became a big fan of TLC, Aaliyah, but they did more R&B. Later in the 2000's Missy Elliott was added to my favourites.

Derya

Wow! This was an educational treat indeed and I don’t think I’ve ever seen you guys have so much fun 🤩. Crooked Smile is an anthem that will live me forever ♾️! My knowledge of hip hop is minuscule at best so I have no references but I would love to see something like this again. The music of my life is all over the place from The Beatles, Motown sound, hard rock of Led Zeppelin, The Moody Blues, The Doors, British Invasion sound through the 70’s soft rock of The Eagles, Foreigner, Journey, The Band, The Doobie Brothers (Michael McDonald), Disco of The Bee Gees, R & B like Luther Vandross, the 80’s Duran Duran, Tears For Fears, Fleetwood Mac, Eric Clapton, Garth Brooks, Vince Gill, MJ, Whitney Huston, Sade, Prince, Tupac, Adele, but in then I stopped listening to music for a very long time. BTS brought me back and I’m so grateful. 😂🤗🤗💜💜🇨🇦

Cheryl ⁷ Lambert

I am waiting for Dark and Wild album reaction now !!!!!!

dyxqdthyfv

my favorite hip hop songs are The Fugees - Fu-Gee-La, You're All I Need by Method Man ft Mary J Blige, Heaven by Nas, My Life by The Game ft Lil Wayne, Up All Night Drake ft Nicki Minaj ( i have many more but those are my top 5)

tori

Ive made it through this video and I just gotta say, I feel like I missed out a little growing up in a rock household and being an emo/punk teenager 🤣 there is so much music out there and I think a lot of people get stuck in their bubble. I think I need to listen to more J Cole and Joyner Lucas. My exposure to rap and hip hop is very basic, radio hits and then just things I've been exposed to randomly. I listen to many artists but nothing classic. I don't know if this counts but my favorite band since I can remember is Linkin Park and Mike Shinoda is a huge part of my childhood. He's also from Fort Minor. His voice along with Chester's serve as the background music of my life. And like anyone my age I grew up listening to Eminem, I know way too many songs of his by heart ever since I was too young to know what any of it meant 🤣 woops.

fox

You saying that usually J-Hopes verses are more hopeful reminded me that you haven't listened to Outro:Tear yet. I can't wait for you to get to that one. It's probably my favorite Rap Line song.

Hana

Hey Patreon has been updated! I like it. It's very interesting to watch this video, but I'll do it tomorrow ... everyone who has a night - sweet dreams. And don’t get sick ... Otherwise, the guys don’t have the strength to watch (
