MEET TEACHER WONJI (aka TENJI)! | Learn Korean w/ Jared & Jordan

WELCOME to the first day of “Learn Korean with Jared & Jordan!”

Don’t worry, we’re gonna start off REALLY slow. Today, we learn about our new Teacher, Wonji, and share a bit about ourselves as well ;)

This is going to be an exhilarating, enriching, and educational journey. We don’t expect to become fluent in Korean within a week, a month, or even a year. This will be a long-term journey that may become circuitous at times, but we are committed to LEARNING!

Our hope is to foster a kind, open-minded, and supportive community of learners. We are just as committed to our learning as we are to YOURS!

LET’S WORK TO BECOME FLUENT IN THIS BEAUTIFUL LANGUAGE BY THE TIME BTS RETURNS FROM THIER MILITARY SERVICE!!

ARMY, YOU HAVE SOME HOMEWORK!

ASSIGNMENT #1: In the comments below, let us know your answers to any or all of the following 5 questions!

- What is your all-time favorite thing to do?

- Why do you want to learn Korean?

- What is ONE BTS song you’d like to be able to rap/sing in Korean?

- If you are an advanced or expert in the Korean language, would you be interested in potentially providing tutoring/extra help to us and other ARMYs outside of class?

- What is ONE “ground rule” you would like for all of us to follow/abide by during this learning journey.

DUE DATE: Whenever the hell you have the energy to do it!

LESSON #1 COMING SOON. We’ll be introducing ourselves to the Hangul Alphabet!

ARMY, as always, we truly appreciate your love and support (WE’LL CONTINUE SAYING THIS UNTIL THE END OF TIME). Your subscription allows us to produce higher-quality reaction videos, and moves us closer to our goal of doing this full-time! Let us know if you have any questions, feedback, thoughts, etc. at any time! BORAHAE!! 💜💜

MEET TEACHER WONJI (aka TENJI)! | Learn Korean w/ Jared & Jordan

Comments

Hello. I have been practicing every day. I also have practiced with some language learning apps, but it's difficult not being able to talk to anyone. Some of my favorite things to do are baking and decorating cakes (I received my certificate in Pastry and Baking last year), reading books now that I only have one class to go for my Associate's Degree and gardening.  There are a few reasons I want to learn Korean. First, I want to understand the lyrics to BTS songs and watch their shows or Vlives without needing subtitles. Secondly, one of the cake artists I follow is Korean. I would like to purchase her book and which is in Korean. Not only that the entire website is as well so I haven't been able to figure out how to buy the book. I'm a little afraid to touch anything on the screen. Lol Trying to choose one BTS song was difficult but my pick is Life Goes On. I can sing the chorus a bit. I'm very excited about this class and would like to thank you Jared and Jordan for doing this with us. I would also like to thank Teacher Wonji for her time as well.

Korean Assignment entered: Write, I love writing. Stories are the best. Wrote songs with my sister but discovered our stories were the strongest aspect and so started writing those. I want to learn because it’s a beautiful language. Unlike French, which I wanted to learn years ago, with Korean I’d be able to use it daily with understanding BTS and kdramas. I want to learn Epiphany and on the side Super Tuna for the fun of it. Okay, that’s my homework. 조이 (I can spell my name)

Hi guy, so happy to be going on this journey with, I have been trying to learn Hangul on my own now since 2020 but its going slow, so it will be fun to learn with someone else.1) My favorite thing to do is read, (2) I started learning the language after becoming ARMY in 2019 and because I'm h hoping to visit South Korea and learn about the culture and understand what BTS are saying when they are singing, rapping or just been their crazy selves. (3) One rule all must have is to be kind to each other, even if you don't agree with what someone say you don't have to be rude, (4 I love all BTS songs it hard to choose. Can't wait to begin. 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜

So the answer to your questions: 1) My favorite things to do: I love to travel, I love going to concerts (travel for concerts is a bonus :) ), I love music and I have been a singer my whole life (not professionally but have sang in choirs, church singing groups, praise teams, weddings and funerals, random events). I don't play any instruments but used to do some percussions just for fun and would love to learn an instrument (guitar or piano would be the top ones I would like to know how to play). 2) I have wanted to learn Korean since becoming ARMY about 3 years ago. I have gone online to try to learn from youtube videos and even bought the BTS learn Korean interactive book but doing it alone I kind of lost steam and didn't keep going consistently. I'm hoping having a community to learn with will help me stay with it. I'd love to visit Korea one day and it would be nice to know some of the language to be able to get around with. I also want to be able to know what people are saying when I watch BTS and other Kpop groups as well as Kdramas. 3) I'd love to sing any number of their more ballad style songs. There are too many to choose from but I think one that is vocal heavy would be my choice (don't see me rapping it that fast lol). 4) I doubt I'd get so advanced I could tutor but lets say it happened...then sure. :) 5) One ground rule for us to follow...keep up the positivity ARMY is known for...no being negative about ourselves or others when we aren't "getting it right", readily help others who need it and don't hesitate asking for help when you do, Stick with it...don't quit because it looks too hard because it might be but if babies in Korea can learn, we can too. :)

- What is your all-time favorite thing to do? My all-time favorite thing to do is a toss-up between, cooking, singing, listening to audiobooks or music [BTS, of course!], and writing. I do most of these each day. - Why do you want to learn Korean? Ever since I found BTS, I've wanted to really understand them without subtitles so I can get all the jokes the editors don't translate, and to understand the songs and be able to sing them properly. Now, I also have a strong desire to visit South Korea and so I want to be fluent enough to enjoy my stay and be able to actually speak to people in their own language, and seriously, how amazing would it be to attend a BTS concert in their home country and *actually understand* them?! 🤩😍 - What is ONE BTS song you’d like to be able to rap/sing in Korean? Life Goes On 💜 - If you are an advanced or expert in the Korean language, would you be interested in potentially providing tutoring/extra help to us and other ARMYs outside of class? I am just now completing level 1 of TTMIK on Bangtan Academy, I don't think I'm up for tutoring others just yet. 😅 - What is ONE “ground rule” you would like for all of us to follow/abide by during this learning journey. Learning new things is difficult, and learning a new language as an adult is even more challenging. Don't get lost in the hard stuff, remember to enjoy the act of learning itself, in other words: Have FUN!

Ok! Finally answering these questions and what not lol. I have been busy voting, streaming, mailing Army mail and all the fun things. (I've also been keeping up with my Korean tutor but obviously cannot miss this of course! Here are my answers! What is my favorite thing all time to do? Aside from stan BTS of course, my next favorite thing is music. I sing, play bass guitar, and used to do live gigs before COVID. It’s an amazing outlet. I also enjoy watching nature documentaries - when I’m not streaming of course! Why do you want to learn Korean? This will be a continuation of practice for me as I have a tutor as well. I think it is great to practice with Army since this is the inspiration for me learning in the first place. I also would love to increase my knowledge of writing as well beyond hearing. Also, to continue to feel the emotion behind the Korean language when shared for those words that are not translatable directly across languages. This is so exciting! What is one BTS song I would like to rap/sing in Korean. So this is a hard one. I have the majority of chorus or popular title lyrics memorized and what not. I would have to come back to this after really thinking about it - I will say memorizing mic drop was LOTS OF FUN and recommend it. If you are an advanced or expert in the Korean language, would you be interested in potentially providing tutoring/extra help to us and other ARMYs outside of class? I think I will use this as more practice for me here but thanks for asking! What is ONE “ground rule” you would like for all of us to follow/abide by during this learning journey? I would say ground rule for individuals is to make a promise to themselves that they will not give up. Learning a new language can be a challenge and Korean is so beautiful but it can get a little tricky in some aspects for some people. As a group, I would say to be mindful that everyone is coming from different levels. If people know something, be just as enthusiastic as if you do not know it since this is a class room setting. And have fun and discipline to practice outside of class!

Assignment # - What is ONE “ground rule” you would like for all of us to follow/abide by during this learning journey? This is more of a suggestion than a ground rule! I strongly suggest using Hangul (the Korean alphabet only) and never using Romanization (that's when the pronunciation of the word is represented by our letters - like what you've read on the Doolset translations). You'll be glad you did! Koreans are very proud of their alphabet - it's actually a great alphabet and you'll soon learn why. It's so easy! No actual Korean is written with Romanization. And if you have it handy, as in under the Hangul spelling, your eye will wander to the Romanization. You'll learn Korean so much faster without it!! I'm really looking forward to picking up my studies again with y'all!!

This is so exciting 🤩🤩🤩 Ive been wanting to learn Korean but never actually got around to doing it. Like Wonji said, the Hangul alphabet is pretty easy to learn, it actually only took me 30min to learn it one day and then I could basically read Twitter posts from the members, though very very slowly lol. But I think I actually got better over the years and though I don’t speak Korean I can sometimes get an idea of what their tweets or insta posts are saying based on the limited words I know 😁 I can’t wait to learn more with you guys 😁😁

Assignment #1 What is your all-time favorite thing to do? Listen to loud music and drive - Why do you want to learn Korean? Because I spend a lot of my time immersed in this culture, learning the language is a way to respect and give back. They (the artists) found a way to be universal and cross language lines that means I can do the same. I’ve also never stuck with learning a language, I’m already invested in something that is so fun it might work this time. Korean just sounds good to my ears honestly And for Kdrama, less subtitle reading What is ONE BTS song you’d like to be able to rap/sing in Korean? ‘Home’ - What is ONE “ground rule” you would like for all of us to follow/abide by during this learning journey. Stay positive in your progress Thank you Wonji for being the leader on this journey!

My favorite thing to do is read. When I was a kid I could read a book in two days, three if I was slow. My mom would take me to the library all the time and I still go on my own all the time to study. Lately, I listen to a lot of audiobooks because I don’t have nearly as much free time as I did as a child. I want to learn Korean because I want to visit one day and eat all of the yummy food and I want to be able to order in their native language. I also want to be able to watch the content the boys put out without relying so much on subtitles. One song I’d love to be able to sing all the way through is butterfly. It’s my all time favorite song from them and I can sing a lot of it, but I still don’t know every word im singing lol. (another one id love to be able to sing is magic shop!!!)
