I love Chopper, matter of fact it's my 3rd favorite on the album. The list of non household name rappers adds to the grittiness and I always wanna here Buk of Psychodrama.

This is the video I joined for after seeing you do F&L and The Cool. After those two, unfortunately Atlantic Records blocked up his creative process massively and he was forced to put out super mediocre records but once he was freed from that situation the bars have been slowly but surely coming back in true form. Just for context. Thanks for these

To add on to the legend of Lupe, it is an ongoing theory that the youtube channel "TimesNuRoman" is actually Lupe creating the video content. It's his way of breaking down his bars without having to verbally do it, being that he has said in past interviews that he won't do full breakdowns of his bars so that our imagination can roam free. Lupe is THE greatest lyricist of all time.

Been absolutely loving all of the Lu videos, they’ve really gotten me back into him and made me remember why he’s the goat!
Wasn’t a huge fan of this album when it came out and it’s still not my favorite the normal way through but backwards it’s actually a great deal better IMO.
Can’t wait for more Lupe reactions! He’s got so much amazing work and is way too slept on so would love to get him all the attention possible

Another example of Lupe playing with the sounding of words, on Deliver the chorus, "Pizza man don't come here no more," can be heard as "Peace of man don't come here no more" for the same reasons he listed the pizza man doesn't come around anymore.

For Prisoner 1 & 2, the story goes from the actually convicted prisoner to saying how the guards are also prisoners and them getting jealous because the criminals are allowed to leave. Because of this, it can be read as "Prisoner WON & Prisoner TOO" rather than "1 & 2." In the first part, the prisoners won because they were rehabilitated and able to leave. In the second part, the guards are jealous because they are "prisoners too" and can't get out. It's absolutely insane. Lupe is a different species.

Also funny story about the song Chopper. In one of Lupe's last interviews he explained that Chopper wasn't supposed to be that long. He had sent everyone the instrumental and it was 32 bars long. He was thinking they would send back 16 but everyone sent a full 32. He did not want to cut out or slim down their verses and he felt like it would be wrong to ask them to redo their work so he went with it. He knew that there was a big chance that many fans wouldn't like it but the song got a lot of positive feedback.

Fantastic video! If you do end up doing Drogas Wave I highly recommend splitting up the project the way Lupe has it. The first part should be the first 9 songs I believe. This album is a double disk album so those are the Wave part of the concept. Then the rest of the songs are the Drogas part. It all ties in together but it helps make more sense if you know which songs are part of the first disk and which songs are part of the second disk as there is a change in musical theme. I don't want to say more since it is kind of spoiling.

I agree with the Drogas WAVE recommendation; however, that is a very dense project and much more challenging than Tetsuo and Youth in my opinion. I would also recommend his latest EP, HOUSE. One of the most digestible projects he's done but still dense in quality

Lupe is a master class lyricist. Drogas Wave has to be next. Great reaction as always.

Everytime I listen to Lupe's work for the first time, I close my eyes and let him take me wherever TF he wants me to go and enjoy the ride. But first, we feel... Good job Jon, we already know what's up, we just want you to enjoy the brilliance that is Lupe's music. That's all we ask.

Dots and Lines is all about not selling your soul to huge record labels. From Genius: (Lupe uses sine as a homophone, and a synonym of mark – he believes signing to a major label (the beast) would be like selling your soul to the devil. Considering Lupe’s struggles over at Atlantic Records, we can understand his advice to stay on a straight path, unlike that of the Sine function in geometry)

Anyways, I'm one of the people that fully believes that Mural is the best hip hop song ever. As you said, how could you disagree? But Prisoner 1 & 2 isn't far from the top I think... That song is on another level
2020-11-06 20:11:46 +0000 UTC
The Lyricology video on the first bars of Mural is amazing, you need to watch it

TimesNuRoman on youtube has really good visual representations of a lot of the songs and this video from Lyricology is a great breakdown on like the first half of Mural (sucks he didn't finish it):
Lyricology: https://youtu.be/6apVcAZVRAM
TimesNuRoman: https://youtu.be/EpZfIyhp-ZA
And this isn’t exactly a breakdown of all the content but it’s Lupe talking about the album if you’re interested: https://youtu.be/JJR2M1YJVNk
And then of course you’ve got genius. Loved the video been looking forward to it, hope you also do Drogas Wave but that ones an even longer mind fuck lol

When you asked about any breakdowns/video essays on this album, the best I can reccomend is a channel called timesNuRoman that does video breakdowns on lupe songs in terms of imagery and meaning there is no speaking though. Definately worth a watch imo: Body of Work: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U5RexGnI8NE Dots & Lines: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dDAJ-rXxA_Y Adoration of the Magi: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EpZfIyhp-ZA Mural: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QUZZMk09SgU

i just want to point out one thing that you may or may not have missed only because Lupe has made a habit of doing this in more recent songs so you can start to look out for it. In the chorus of Prisoner 1&2 he does this thing where he uses the initials of the words love and hate Love is L.ooking O.ver V.arious E.rrors and hate is H.abitually A.ccelerating T.error E.verywhere

If you play the album backwards, you get the story of a baby being born and having to grow up in this kind of society at such an early age.. some say this character is Michael Young History, because it fits well with his story and Lupe makes references to The Cool throughout. All the way until Chopper, which then you Lupe’s story, about how he came from making it out the system of the ghetto just to be trapped in another system, the music industry.. but by the end he’s finally free and is able to express himself how he wants to. He gives you his mural, which is a summary of his entire life and career.

something interesting about this album is that Atlantic (Lupes label) didn’t even want to release it but I’m pretty sure anonymous leaked it themselves and Atlantic had no choice but to release it to the public

For example the song body of work is a song about masonry, the golden ratio, alchemy and also not signing deals with record labels all in one.

There's a small YouTube channel called "times nu roman" that makes video about Lupe songs. He shows clips from movies and cartoons and kind of deciphers some of the complex bars

this album is the exact reason whenever I hear people saying "so and so mainstream artist is the best lyricist of all time" i tell them to do more research.
