FKA TWIGS - MAGDALENE - UNCUT ALBUM REACTION!

Comments

When I first saw this reaction I was truly annoyed about the fact that you were hungover because I wanted you to be as blown away as I was, but then I went back and watched it again and the pure chock and confusion is actually really entertaining. The "my brain disassembled and reassembled itself" is a great moment. Now I love it and I've watched it multiple times. It'd be fun if you revisited it/I'd like to know what you think about it in retrospect.

Very experimental album, I’ve started it and randomly played songs but I haven’t been in the mindset to go straight thru and listen to everything. So this is a treat for me! Some reactions to some of her music videos while you’re listening to the album would be cool, most of hers are interesting to watch.

Madgelene holds such a special place in my heart. Another experimental artist I think you’d enjoy is Sevdaliza. Her debut album Ison is quite beautiful, and so are her EPs, The Calling and Joanna. She has a trap influenced sound, which she blends with gorgeous strings and middle eastern instruments. It’s such a treat.

Definitely worth giving a listen to her first album LP1, which is perhaps an easier introduction to her as an artist, it is a little less experimental but no less intense.

Wow. Wasn’t expecting to wake up and see this notification. I put this album in my top 5 last year. After my first listen the album I could most compare this to was Bjork’s Vulnicura, in that they were both break up albums that sidestepped using music to find a resolution. Normally half way through a break up project you tend to find a bunch of songs about reconciling with a persons memory and you’d end with something about chin up and plenty of fish in the sea. Instead we end on a tense wondering note. What happens next? Where’s the resolution? What if there isn’t any? The whole project is about her relationship and break up with R Pats. When they started dating it was during his Twilight fame era and the amount of pure vitriolic hatred she received from waves of 13 year old fans, much of it aimed at the fact that they were an interracial couple, was staggering. If the music seems disjointed my guess would be she’s trying to show the private and the public simultaneously, kind of overlapping them on each other. Some of the best moments here for me are when she’s struggling with that idea - how do you have true intimacy when you’re with someone famous? When the public expects the walls of your private spaces to be made of cellophane so to speak so they can peek inside to “see us together see us apart”. It’s interesting that you mentioned several times about interpretive dance because she’s also a well known and very talented dancer. I was lucky enough to see her perform these songs live (before the pandemic!!!!) and her live performance are on another level. She went and studied for a year to learn how to do traditional sword dancing for Mary Magdalene and for Cellophane she did a performance best summed up by my brother who said “I never thought I’d live to see the day where a mother fucking pole dance made me cry”. So yes! Very experimental.
