Getting Paranoid?! Burglars in the Neighborhood!

Your cheap solutions are just as effective as an expensive alarm system, if not more so. The thing about camera systems is that they are great at seeing that someone did something after the fact. The beams across the windows, and the securing of physical devices goes a lot further. I installed a camera system at my parents house a few years ago, and one night my dad left his truck out in the driveway and was robbed from. The camera did a great job of capturing that some asshole had done it, but no way to get any usable features. Camera placement then becomes super important. Whole house alarm systems work great to get the police out there eventually, but in most cases the guy will still have plenty of time to take stuff. Making things difficult to access goes a lot further. Whatever the easiest target is goes first.
