The thing to remember (IMHO) is that most of the people involved were mentally ill to some extent, whether it was shell shock, war weariness, isolation, loneliness, abandonment, or simple stress of living and trying to make a living in wild and changing times.
The death of Isabel II hit me hardest because she seemed the sanest, most well adjust, and just plain good person in the cast.

This is another good movie. I have to say, I don't think this is about control. Susannah never acted on impulse; she never cheated on any of her partners, and she told Alfred from the jump, "I think I can only cause you pain, Alfred." I believe she ultimately killed herself because she felt loss (for the child that never was and the love that was lost with Tristan), guilt, and shame (for possibly wishing the death of both Samuel and Isobel, and still having feelings for Tristan while probably hurting Albert). In that state of mind, she chose death and probably believed it was a mercy to everyone involved.
