A Preview of Silliness Ahead

Hello astrolabes,

I appreciate that an astrolabe isn't an animal, and I hope you can forgive the departure from the usual greeting tradition, but astrolabes are pretty cool actually (a bit like an ancient mechanical star chart if you didn't know) and if someone called me an astrolabe, I think I'd be really stoked and feel suddenly capable of achieving my dreams and finally ready to let all that deep-seated resentment towards my dad go, so yeah, I guess you're welcome?

I just thought it might be time again for another thrilling episode of I'm Not Dead and This is Where I've Been. I'm not dead and this is where I've been:

One of the stories is in the style of letters being sent back and forth, and I've been searching for a voice actor for quite some time now as one of the characters. So, if you happen to know someone who'd be comfortable reading a female part in what turns out to be a rather sad scifi story, that'd be appreciated. The part would be paid of course, and obviously with full credit given. I'm not particular about portfolios or anything like that, but if they have a sample of their work already that'd be enormously useful. exurb1achannel@gmail.com would be the best place to drop me a line if so.

In recommendations, I do have a few. I was a fairly massive fan of The Three Body Problem and the subsequent books – maybe you've come across them too. A TV adaptation dropped a few weeks back now and I must say I don't hate it. Always nice to see stories about big collaborative human projects – not something we're very interested in of late and sinister aliens are a great way of inspiring them, huh.

After years of being told to, I finally read Spin, the Robert Charles Wilson scifi novel, and boy howdy, what a ride. Scifi has lots of possible shapes, but surely the most fun version is: Well, wouldn't it be crazy if this thing happened and HEY LET'S JUMP THOUSANDS OF YEARS AHEAD AND CRANK THAT SHIT UP TO 11. Which is exactly what Spin is and I'm fairly sure you'll like it too. It's a brave thing to set up a mystery premise, then never actually reveal the mystery – other than this book, the only other place I've seen it done successfully is the TV show The Leftovers, which, if you haven't seen it, I suggest you quit your job/studies immediately and sit through the thing in one go because it's wonderful.

Hm, am I really going to recommend chess? I think so. Little black and white squares with horsies on top, you know the one. I've never been a strong player and just assumed getting good was a privilege reserved for the kinds of people who find themselves romantically attracted to excel spreadsheets. I bumped into a biography of the legendary Bobby Fischer a little while back (Endgame by Frank Brady, superb) and it suddenly hit me what a thriving community there still is around the game. And I couldn't help myself – it's become quite an obsession and I'm beginning to understand what the appeal is at last. There is a beauty to unconventional moves, Bobby Fischer being famous for them. And there is a massive satisfaction to coming up with a sneaky stratagem and somehow pulling it off every now and then. So anyway, I've discovered this really obscure game you haven't heard of, and please don't tell anyone else, we don't want the thing going mainstream.

Anyway, everything's fine, promise. I've ranted before about trying to learn to not bully stories into becoming real and give them the time they ask for. It's frustrating having to wait for them to trust you, hoping they'll finally come out and say hi like a shy cat under the sofa, but in my experience, even when it takes a while like it is now, it's usually worth the satisfaction of writing the thing in the end. So please bear with me a little longer, and I promise there's a sizable content drop coming and maybe even a new book.

Massive love as always and hope you're doing well,

Ex

Hey exurb1a, next year I plan on visiting Sofia, Bulgaria and was wondering if you were in the area if it would be okay to sign some books for me? The fifth science and ocelots?

Cullen frierson

You wrote something that really helped me break out of the western manifest destiny—unlimited expansion mind-prison Americans are born into, I think it was called the girl in(and?) the pit. Really fucked me up for a while and it was totally fucking awesome, that was a gift, thanks man.

Johh Yaw

hey mr british turtle :)) been a lurking supporter for a bit, wanted to drop a msg I’m looking forward to the new project!! I’m always amazed and blown away by your works ^^ Not exaggerating when I say a bunch of your videos have changed my life for the better :’) thanks for sharing your wisdom and kindness to the world. (Esp “the answer is not a hut in the woods”. Thank you for existing and sharing your thoughts with the world. Hoping you do this forever!!

Have you ever played Library of Ruina? It's a half visual novel half carddeck builder game. It's a sci-fi dystopia with an ultimate theme of the different ways people deal with experiences that break them apart. I don't recommend games usually, but if I were to only ever be able to do one it would be that one. It's 100 hours yet somehow you remember every part and makes you think about it years after finishing it. Hell, I finished it in 2022. If you do check it out, you won't regret it.

Hikori

Hey I’m new here, if you were series in your “about” section abou sending and responding to emails, I just sent you a wild one. Just a heads up

Alissa Vanovermeire

Hello Mr Turtle, I've recently come across a game called 'SOMA' and the entire time I played it all I could think was "Fuck Exurb1a would love the shit out of this". Not sure if you've played/heard of it but it genuinely Iis tremendous. It's about the passage of time and what it really means to be a human with a few jump scares thrown in to keep things interesting. Anyways - Give it a go once you're done with this project, or before, up to you

Hola Exurb1a - I like that greeting, it fits the weather in my country (and propably yours too) getting summery. A book about your beautiful feline would be even more existing. I just fear my two cats could get jealous. But anyways, you swayed me to buy the book for sure, when my felines get jealous, they need to deal with it. Or they execute their plan for killing me afterwards...

Lynn Bochnick

Hello there my cybernetic friend. Lovely to hear from you as always. First off, the VR element to the story WAS odd, no? I can't remember if it's ever really explained why the aliens bothered with it. Wouldn't it just have been easier to turn up on our planet by surprise? Why spend all that time communicating with us and TELLING US ALL OF THEIR PLANS SO WE CAN COMBAT THEM? Oo, I think we did talk about the Quest, but I'm curious to hear how you're getting on with it. I imagine game-testing is quite the commitment, and a rather different experience to just playing for fun. Hope everything's going well with that. On the subject of self-help, I wonder if you've come across Man's Search For Meaning? It's a little bit of an internal deepdive, but I promise it's worth a read if you haven't yet, certainly asks us to work out what our position is relative to the rest of the universe. Just having a read about Marie Kondo now and this sounds fascinating. My initial impression was that it's a minimalist philosophy, but it seems a whole lot deeper than that, no? Hope that's keeping you busy anyway! Massive love as always, speak soon, Ex

exurb1a

Hola Siân - hope you're doing well. First of all my, head has recently been full of thoughts of the Nuberu and I hold you solely responsible. I was convinced it could be worked into a scifi story but the thing seems a little beyond me. If one falls out of the clouds, I now know to give it shelter anyway, so thanks for that. Hey, I occasionally get hammered and do jigsaws, no shame at all in sodoku. I can however vouch for turning 30 (congratulations of course) - just a few years ahead of you, I can say that it's a bit like your twenties, but you have slightly more idea of what you're doing and who you are. Ideally. I mean, not in my case, but ideally. I'd most certainly be interested in potentially taking you up on your voice acting offer there. I'm still having a hard time finding someone for the role, I must admit. And I've heard extremely good things about Fallout, and am still mourning the end of season 1 of Silo (big recommend) so will be sure to check it out, thank you kindly. Hope everything's going well in the land of mythology, Ex

exurb1a

Hola Lynn - you know, I think that's an excellent idea and will do everything I can to make it happen. I have passed on the suggestion and she also agrees it's an excellent idea. She further suggests making the entire book about her actually and I'm inclined to agree

exurb1a

An excellent choice!

exurb1a

Hello there Owen. Firstly, thank you, that's lovely of you. Secondly I'll make a promise here then. I've been avoiding putting up the Geometry for Ocelots audiobook for such a long time now, mainly because I'd have to listen back to edit it. But I really should. So, I *promise* to release it - or do everything in my power anyway - along with the new stories when go up a few months from now.

exurb1a

Thank you kindly! Hope they don't disappoint

exurb1a

Ohh, it's just me and the cat looking out the window and feeling guilty about not working

exurb1a

Thank you Jess, that's ever so kind

exurb1a

Hiya! I don’t mind being called an astrolabe, although you’re essentially saying I could show you the way to heaven and that’s quite a lot of responsibility actually! Funny you bring up chess, I rewatched the Queen’s Gambit over the weekend which has strangely reignited my interest in it & just in games and puzzles in general. At once point I was laying out playing cards and playing solitaire, whilst watching the chess on screen and trying to do a sudoku puzzle. Unfortunately I don’t think this endeavour has made me any smarter. I turned 30 last week and I think I’ve leapfrogged straight to 72. 🤣 The 5 part series you’ve got planned sounds great. I don’t think the world can have too much interesting sci-fi, good to keep dreaming. If my voice was a tad more palatable then I’d probably get in contact but I’m sure you’ll get some really great talent in & create something brilliant! ☺️ the illustrations are gorgeous. Have you been watching the new Fallout tv series? It’s very good. Alarmingly good. Interesting that Amazon is commissioning a few series that have large villainous corporations being uncovered. Looking forward to the new vids and hope you’re keeping well!

Siân Powell

You kind of hyped me for the video series. Also can you put a few pictures of your cat at the end or beginning of the book? Like not in the story, but just like there is often a page telling all the data (publisher, author etc.) or a short foreword, one or two pages with pictures of her. It would be a significant point for me in deciding if I should buy the book. Cats are like SO FREAKING CUTE. And your cat has the attached value of being the cat of my favorite YouTube channel.

Lynn Bochnick

I have note on my phone, a list of things I want, there is one thing on it and it’s an astrolabe

Nicole Neri

5 part videos, a few days apart!? What a wonderful few weeks that'll be. Cant wait. Side note, i know ive asked a few times, and youve got a lot on your plate, but is there any news of audiobooks coming soon?

Owen Manning

Woeeewwee hiiii! Just Googled Astrolable & can confirm it's very cool! It reminds me of the compass from Northern Lights. Hmm, this is five-part story is interesting. But mostly interesting because I think about Utopias occasionally; I think about how they'd be a unique sci-fi concept because there's no trouble or conflict... but then I realise that wouldn't be a possible story, BECAUSE there's no conflict. Love to see how a humanity that got their shit together would work. ^_^ When searching for voice actors I would recommend a site called Casting Call Club. Would be neat if a Patreon did the voicelines though! 😄 This is sooo funny, I read The Three Body Problem and wasn't realllly into it. As a VR/gaming fan, the virtual world thing was strange to me. Meanwhile my dad doesn't like TV but sometimes watches entire shows. He chose TBP recently. I don't know why, and I think he's wondering the same thing haha. I love this description of this book I've never heard of. Def adding Spin to the reading list. Hearing you talk about chess is so cute haha. I've never been a fan myself (I tried), but glad to hear you're enjoying it. ^_^ Funny how ideas work like this. It's like anything that just "comes" to you - don't beckon it and it will come naturally. A bit like sleeping, love or things you've forgotten. Meanwhile in Mr Robot's world... - Everything is going at a normal pace. The main things in my life right now are: - Continued progress on Kurzory Quest - Planning a trip to NL in the summer. - Testing a game on the Quest - I currently own a free Quest 3 and it is very cool. The game-testing is a lot more work than I expected though. - I've been enjoying Black Mesa. I don't play many games nowadays, but it's been a really good time. - Been reading "How to Win Friends and Influence People". I'm a big fan of how-to/self-help books so I'm enjoying it. It's a weird title, but as a result I've been finding myself a bit more confident with people. - Been executing Marie Kondo's lessons on my junk at home. I am very excited to get rid of all the old shit I have. 😁 ...And that's all from me! Great to hear your wonderful progress on work, life, the Universe and Everything. Until next time, Robot ^_^ 💛

RobotWobot

Oh my god I love the idea for the five part videos, and the illustrations look sooo good. I hope they come out soon, but I'll wait as long as I have to :)

Carpincho Cósmico

what does the unbearable weight of creativity feel like, I would like to know

Johh Yaw

i know i’m haunting you. but if you ever wanna take a break and think about someone else’s imaginary problems of reality, please reach out. j^
