Hello Cosmonauts. What’s new with you?
Below you’ll find the draft version of the paperback cover for the new book, which I’m obviously rather excited about. All being well, it will be out by the time the next video drops.
The reaction to the last video rather took me by surprise. The entire time I was making it I was quietly thinking, “No one’s going to give a shit about this.” I subsequently received emails after it uploaded proving quite to the contrary. In any case, as always, I’m very, very, very happy to see people are just as excited about universe stuff as I am.
Two recommendations for you book-wise from this month. The first is: The Hero with a Thousand Faces by Joseph Campbell. This was the book that inspired George Lucas to make Star Wars, partly. It’s essentially the blueprint for all the myths and stories we’ve been telling for thousands of years now, particularly the archetype of the hero. Safe to say I thought this whole comparative mythology thing was total, fabricated bollocks just a few weeks ago. I picked this book up on a whim to see if it could get me out of a creative blindspot, and instead it tore down all of my assumptions, politely but firmly, and installed new software in my head. I won’t rant about the thing, but if you have any interest in our shared mythology, or why we keep telling the same stories over and over, pick this one up. It’s fucking wonderful.
The second is Watership Down by Richard Adams and I’m not even finished with it yet. It’s a book about bunnies. It’s also not a book about bunnies. I won’t spoil the thing, but so far it’s been the most charming, disturbing, hearfelt book I’ve read in a very long time and I think you’ll like it very much too. So give that a read too please, if you have the time.
I won’t labour the point, but I believe the channel is about to hit 1,000,00 subscribers. I’m not sure how that makes me feel as I’m trying not to think too much about it. It’s a fairly arbitrary number, but when I actually try to imagine that many people physically, it doesn’t compute. So yes. As always, I’m just very grateful anyone is giving a shit at all in the first place.
I could rant on some more, but I think it’ll just be wasting your time really. As ever though, above I mentioned I’m amazed anyone’s still watching. More than that, I’m amazed anyone’s still supporting the thing. As in: you. It took four scripts to make the new video, it being the fifth. That meant days of playing around with ideas, footage, and jokes, etc, then deleting all of it. I wouldn’t have the freedom to do that in any other profession or situation. And certainly not without your support. If you’re actually enjoying my stuff, it is a direct result - as direct as it gets – of you supporting it in the first place. I’ve said it 1000 times now, but it wouldn’t exist without you, and I am more grateful than I can possibly say. So just: thank you ever, ever so much.
I’ll put the word out when the paperback is done later this month, if you’re interested. What began as a flippant short story years ago is finally going to be a physical, holdable thing, and I’m rather excited to share it with you. Unless you’ve already read the ebook. In which case that’s cheating. (You can find the ebook files for download in this post.)
Once again, a gigantic thank you, and I hope all’s well on your side,
Ex.
P.S. - Please find Freya's monthly photoshoot attached also.
