New Update: MKM 0.6

Hello everyone!

This version adds new bad endings to MKM. Aside from the dog-boy who already has one such scene, this update adds bad ends for the following enemies: Giant Insect, Mausolea, Futa Centauress and Minotaur Champion. For more details on how the bad ends work please refer to the changelog text file, attached at the bottom of this patreon post.

Basically, bad endings will trigger at a certain point during their normal ero animations. Therefore, whenever Maya is grabbed, ero scenes will now naturally move towards the bad endings.

This specific trigger point varies from enemy to enemy, but they all require that Maya be defeated/fainted by the time the animation loop reaches the trigger point, otherwise the animations will simply loop as per their usual behavior.

To give one example: When the giant insect grabs Maya and the usual pattern of the ero animation goes like this: grabbing, slow, medium, fast, climax. After the climax ends, the insect usually releases Maya, but now if Maya is fainted by that point, the insect won't release her and it will instead carry her into their nest, thus starting the bad end scene. This patterns is more or less the same for other enemies, with small variations here and there.

Alternatively, you can fast-skip to the start of a bad ending by pressing the Dash key (default D). In the advanced options menu, you can also toggle bad ends ON/OFF, as well as toggling the dialogue that now appears during those scenes.

Now, even tough this was a 3 month dev-cycle, it was quite a hectic one on my end which meant that I only got 2 maybe even less month/time of effective work which is a huge bummer, meaning that I wasn't able to finish the other bad ends that I had planned in time for this release and I apologize for that. But additional such endings are coming, specially depending on how well the current ones are received.

Then again, honestly, these endings are deep into feature-creep territory, so I didn't want to go too wild with them, and they already demanded some extra amount of time, simple as they are.

A lot could be done with this concept, but novel ideas such as moving about, controlling Maya or too many complex transitions/interactions would only add more bloat and pile on more dev time. As you'll see, I tried to maintain an overall "pattern" to keep them relatively simple and consistent with one another. Although I did go a bit overboard with the scene of the Minotaur Champion, but since it features a lovely extra character...

On that topic, I might as well run the last poll for MKM and go out with a bang, so for the next month of August, I'll run a poll for people to vote on new ideas/suggestions for bad endings. This time, there will be 4 winners, so the top 4 most voted ideas for bad endings will get implemented into the game. I'll make a new post on the 1st of August explaining the rules of the poll and how it will work in more detail, so please look forward to that.

After that, I think with all of those upcoming bad endings (both of my own creation and the eventual poll winners), these will be the last piece of major content added into MKM.

Seriously, the game was not supposed to have this many enemies and such, but I kinda just tagged along, and here we are. It was kinda supposed to be a 2 or 3 year project, but I underestimated the amount of work required to make even a lite-metroidvania like MKM, let alone one that contains this many enemies, and consequently, countless frames of pixel art animations, which accounts for a huge 70% of my work time.

It is looking more and more unlikely that I'll be able to hit my goal of releasing MKM 1.0 this year like I wanted to, but I'll definitely gear myself up to release it early next year, first 3 to 4 months at most. More than anything, I'm really looking forward to starting a new fresh game project; just thinking about it awakens a fire in me LOL.

But first, I have to complete MKM, so after releasing all of those upcoming bad ends (and the final boss of the game), I'll have to switch into the polishing/refining phase and gear up for the final version, meaning that I'll have to stop adding new enemies and ero animations, otherwise I'll either keep on working on MKM for years to come, or burnout and leave it abandoned; neither of those things would be good, obviously.

So yeah, still lots of work to do, but I'm aiming for the finish line.

Okay so I saw everything you said! You know buddy we all know that a game is hard and long to do. But only you can know how much time you spend on this and efforts. From my side I really think you are doing awesome content. Even if it was not adult game. I'm sure that you would be an awesome indie developper and I mean you are already. Cause your game is literally a great! What I like the most with you is that you always keep your game alive. You putting updates and let your fans test your game to improve it. Could it be you're pressing the Z key? The attack/confirm key is default X, and I just tested it and seems to be working as intended, advancing the dialogue one at a time. On the other hand, the jump/cancel key is default Z, and it indeed skips text if you hold it even slightly.

The earliest post I did here was in November 2019, and right now we're in August 2023... so about 4 years. My original plan was for a 2 year project lol

This update was more then worth the wait. The new bad ends are fantastic, and really make the nice bow on top of what is already a fantastic package. I know you worry about feature creep, and I understand, yeah, this wasn't planned, but I do think it was worth the time and effort. I think you've made something special here, and I'm looking forward to the full release, along with what you make in the future.

Oh these came out AMAZINGLY. I really adore seeing the extended ending, and how Maya ends up succumbing to the corruptive pleasure. Of course, personal favorites are the dog boy and Kaly, as well as the fly, but all of these give a wonderful extension. Especially with how lovingly they're crafted. (this was also my first time fighting Mausolea (sp?) and that was a fairly fun fight, too! I did end up with the black screen bug a few times, where the scenes wouldn't progress at all, but I think those have been reported already. So I'll just say, fantastic work! I really look forward to seeing what else you do with the extended game overs!

Indeed, some developers choose to spend many years working on the same game, and that is a fine and valid approach. To be clear, it is not like I'm averse to the idea; maybe some day, in one of my future game project, if I think it would be great to keep working and iterating on the same game, hey that would be nice. But at the time being, and speaking of MKM specifically, yeah I think I'm about ready to wrap things up sooner rather than later.

Ever since the gallery + arena update, I couldn't stop thinking about how cool it would be if there were couple sections in the game where Maya either cannot dash / use spells at all, or becomes trapped a large room and has to fight off waves of non-boss enemies before the next area opens, like a mini-survival round, with good chances of Maya receiving one game over animation or the other~

As I'm downloading the latest version, lemme just say - critical opinion incoming - I am little afraid that the final pre-v1.0 polish may not be given as much time as it might deserve. I am aware everything else that isn't animation drawing takes way less time to do (like you said, 70%, that's crazy!), but even so, I feel there is a lot of core gameplay / map layout tweaks / regular enemies be capable of surprising every now and then, that could have been spent time on, and elevate this game into something truly special 🥰 I am critical because I am deeply in love with your project ❤️

If you didn't change anything, you can press "X" to go through normally. I assume you were pressing space to progress, which also resets to the last checkpoint. You can also press "Z" to have the text appear instantly.

The animations are amazing but I'm having an issue where when I have the text for the band ends and i try to go to the next text box, I am instead reset back to the last save like i hit the retry button. I believe it's happening because the retry button and the skip text button are the same and I can't find a way around it besides turning off the bad end text boxes

Alright, I'll hop in with the post game group and give my thoughts. I really liked the bad ends! They fit well with each character, and the dialogue really made them felt like actual impromptu ends to Maya's adventure. The glitch with the Minotaur boss was already mentioned, but other than that, I didn't come across any other bugs. I know it took a little longer this time, but still, great work , Mega. I'm excited to see what other ends you have in store and also what will be on next month's poll, along with their winners.

To trigger then from the gallery, you have to do the instant defeat cheat to put your HP to zero. It allowed me to see the previously black screen ends that resulted from re-fighting the boss.

Just tested it and noticed some issues: 1) You get a black screen when you attempt to see the bad ending with bosses you have already beaten. Maybe it has something to do with my saves being transferred over. 2) I am unable to trigger the bad ends from the gallery except for Dog Boy. Anyone else seeing this?

Great to see the update come out! I'll try it out in a bit. In the meantime, just some comments. It's nice to see the game with a lot of stuff in it, but i can understand that you feel it's getting way too heavy with the content-creep. People really want to see certaint things, but it might start taking a toll, both to the game and to your development process. And in the end, I get that it's gotta end somewhere, and work on the other important things must be prioritized. So yeah, even if I don't see certain scenes or ends ultimately implemented in the game, there's already a ton of great stuff, and I'm eager to see the rest of the game finished. And I'll also be excited for the last poll as well, so for now, you've done great work, Mega. :3
