But the same way you can say that they wouldn’t be the big 3 now, you can also say that JID wouldn’t have been part of that big 3 then. Once again, yes he can rap but we know that it’s more about being able to rap. It’s about having your own aura, your own vibe. The question is can we listen to JID without saying “he sounds like…” and the fact of the matter is we can’t! Hes also in his 30s so there’s not a whole lot for him to aspire to musically. Kendrick Drake and J Cole are basically peers. But when they were coming up, they had musical acts to aspire to. Kendrick had 2pac, Eminem, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg. Drake had Lil Wayne and Kanye West. J Cole had Jay Z and Kanye West (artistic direction). There was a lineage. What is JID’s lineage?

The Forever Story is the first classic record we’ve gotten in a LONG time, especially from a newer artist. It’s definitely up there in terms of lyricism, style, and diverse sound. Unless it’s coming from the big 3, lyrical songs just aren’t making waves these days. If Swimming Pools came out today it wouldn’t be nearly as big as it was in 2012, despite it being a classic record.
