Lots of us do things consciously, but are really driven by maybe 30% subconsciously for a different reason that you dont want to admit. All people at a young age especially men wish to have a strong father figure to look up to so I do think thorfinn is looking up to askaladd in that way but subconsciously so he doesnt really realize it.
