In the original Japanese what Kaworu says is not how you would confess romantic feelings in Japanese culture. In Japanese culture it's normal to go to a pubic bath, bathing together is seen as a way of bonding with friends.

2025-05-28 05:07:33 +0000 UTCso, couple things to talk about here with this episode. First addressing the elephant in the room: Yeah this episode is gay af. The Netflix sub specifically tried to "They were roomates" it a bit by changing any time Shinji or Kaworu say "I love you" to "I like you" or "worthy of his grace" just things like that. Technically suki's direct translation could mean either depending on the context but it's like... come on now... They're in a bath together and Kaworu just put hand on Shinji's (who keeps blushing constantly) in the gayest way I could possibly imagine. Honestly if I had to put a label on it I'd say Shinji probably has hetero physical attraction and then is bi-romantic, but then again it's like he's 14 he still has a lot of shit to figure out. I didn't figure myself out in that regard till I was like 20 anyways. Considering this episode came out in 1995 JAPAN, and the gay stuff happens specifically to the protagonist who for 23 prior episodes was just thought to be straight... that's kinda crazy and a bit of a miracle. It almost makes me wonder if the reason Kaworu only got one episode was because Anno was wondering if he could only get away with one gay episode in a country where same sex marriage is still illegal. At least I would think that if the point of Kaworu's character wasn't simply to represent moving past the idea of someone who perfectly understands you entering your life and suddenly fixing everything. He's meant to be a perfect person for Shinji's needs to get him to lower his guard down within the span of a single episode, and ironically enough I do think Kaworu did actually love Shinji in his own weird angel way if he was willing enough to let Shinji kill him. Another thing I'll always respect this episode for is that for a final angel I don't think it could be any more fitting. The show had been building up the idea of angels that could understand the human mind for a while now, so who better to be the final angel then than an ideal human?
