New anime poll

Hi there, so I am a third through Arcane and will probably finish it by the end of next week. So, I want to start gathering anime for after Arcane.

This time, to get a more "niche" anime, there is a rule:
1. No more than 2 cours (so around 26 episodes)
2. No mainstream (I will decide what that means for me after hearing your suggestions, so it might be a bit iffy, but this way I can control it a bit.

Also, there have been many suggesting Monster and I am considering doing it after Death Note (as it would fir into my "long running anime slot" on Mondays and Wednesdays).

Edit: Will be up till Sunday! =)

Comments

Dr. Stone is a great deal too! Just noting it.

OmTsTM

Steins;Gate 0. Best option right now

OmTsTM

Think you would like dungeon meishi and hunterxhunter though the second doesn't fit the criteria.

Gordon Steinberg

Now these three suggestions are less well-known, but in my opinion still really good (although not very deep and cerebral, they're fun to watch) -The Wrong Way to Use Healing Magic is about a guy in a fantasy world who uses, you guessed it, healing magic and does so in unconventional ways. -Campfire Cooking in Another World with My Absurd Skill is about a guy who gets isekaid and has the unique ability to order food from his old world like he's using Lieferando or Flaschenpost or something, and he uses ingredients this other world doesn't have to make really good food and that's how he gets by. -Didn't I Say to Make My Abilities Average in The Next Life is about a girl who dies saving a little kid from getting hit by a truck, and gets rewarded for that by getting to make a wish for her next life, and being reincarnated in a different world with all her knowledge and skills. What she wishes for is in the title, but the godly being who reincarnated her interprets the word "average" differently to how she meant it and so she doesn't end up being average for a human, and instead has magical abilities that are the average among all species on that world.

Smonolith

Alright so I have four suggestions that could be argued mainstream because at least within the anime community they're pretty popular so feel free to ignore these for now: -Shangri-la Frontier is relatively new and it's about a japanese guy who usually only plays relatively unknown, really buggy games applying his skills to a mainstream, well-made game. -Apothecary Diaries is about a really smart girl in ancient china who lives with her father in some village that presumably gets most of its income through its brothels, and knows a lot about medicine and natural science. She then gets kidnapped and is forced to work at the emperor's palace, and finds ways to apply her skills there. -Bocci the Rock! is about a japanese girl who's really bad at socializing and really good at playing the guitar joining a band. It's not an action anime, nothing magical or too crazy is happening there, just a socially awkward girl starting to learn social skills like, for example, talking to people. Also the animation when the band plays is apparently really accurate?

Smonolith

Of course monster also

daragh faro

Steins gate

daragh faro

100% support season 1 of promised neverland, honestly without reading the manga season 2 might not be that bad but i feel you would get frustrated with the pacing

Joey Johns

Kakegurui

Firippu

Parasyte

Koyama L

"The Promised Neverland" might be right up your alley. I don't want to tell you anything about it not even the themes. Season 1 is 12 episodes and delivers a complete narrative. Technically there is a season 2 but that should absolutely not be seen. It came out way later due to the immense success of the first season, but was poorly done. If you put it under "First season only", it will get a lot more votes in the poll.

VaanGov

Death parade☺️

JettePoop

monster

GALLUMBAS

Yeah it's alright

Narwhalz123

I second this! Angel beats is very sweet

Merry

Oh, and Angel Beats

Gage Donaldson

Spice and wolf is a good one

Gage Donaldson

I never watched Code Black. Is it any good?

Nicholas Amos

Agreed man its so cool. Its a little silly but also serious and the characters are just the best

Narwhalz123

Haha. How could I forget Cells at Work? That has to be one of the most fun anime I've ever seen.

Nicholas Amos

In no particular order: Steins;Gate (2011, 26ep). -has sequel Elfen Lied (2004, 13ep). Hakuoki ~Demon of the Fleeting Blossom~ (2010, 12ep). -has sequel Psycho-Pass (2012-2013, 22ep) -has sequel Tokyo Ghoul (2014, 12ep) -has sequel Death Parade (2015, 12ep). Angolmois: Genkou Kassenki / Record of Mongol Invasion (2018, 12ep). Black Lagoon (2006, 12ep). Riddle Story of Devil (2014, 12ep). Ergo Proxy (2006, 23ep).

Nicholas Amos

Steins; Gate

Sean

I'm all for steins;gate

Raidon 95

86 is pretty good if you want to give a shot

Frisky Rage

"Elfen Lied", right up your alley.

TheWizOz

Cells at work is 1 season short episodes very good character development educational. A real treat in the anime world and its not super mainstream. Parasyte is also a very good anime also less known also very short

Narwhalz123

Terror in Resonance / 91 Days / Moriarty The Patriot

Andrew EGO

To add on to what others have suggested, I have to say Made in Abyss. It's beautiful and horrific, and is a world full of mystery with some strong cosmic horror elements. I think you'd have fun analyzing it.

meta angel

Stein's Gate

Kevin Clark

Serial Experiments Lain, Steins Gate, Inuyashiki, Beastars

Edward Nygma

My suggestions would be: Shinsekai Yori (one of the most complete 10/10's I've seen) Baccano (fast-paced and anachronistic story-telling) Boogiepop wa Warawanai (spooky) Kanata no Astra (space mystery) To Your Eternity (relatively mainstream, interesting concepts) Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu (very slow, but very good story) Sonny Boy (trippy and introspective) Zankyou no Terror (a wild ride) I second the above Death Parade suggestion.

Fred

The first season is enough of a self contained story that it's probably ok. I heartily 2nd this recommendation

dddj158

Ah it's a bit longer than I thought. 41 episodes.

Corey Hughes

Hmm, Psycho-Pass fits that criteria and might be up your alley.

Corey Hughes

Paranoia agent (13 eps, one of the most visceral shows I've watched) Your Lie in April (22 eps, a bit mainstream but really touching, esp as a pianist) Death Parade (12 eps, made me cry at least twice) Summertime Rendering (25 eps, extremely well put together) Made in Abyss (25 eps, seems tailor made for you) Shadow's house (25 eps, won't win but thoroughly enjoyable) Edgerunners (10 eps, just peak studio trigger)

Erjon Sejdijaj

4 Occult/Horror/Psychological anime that fit: Witch Hunter Robin (26 episodes), Ergo Proxy (23 episodes), Serial Experiments Lain (13 episodes), Divergence Eve (13 episodes, 26 total if you also watch the sequel, Misaki Chronicles) 2 that fit if you don't watch the optional OVA/Films: Vampire Princess Miyu (26 episodes, 4 OVAs), Silent Mobius (26 episodes, 2x 1 hour films)

GrumpyOldAndy

Made in Abyss. Not sure if that counts as mainstream. As for Monster I started watching it recently since I've seen people mention it and I'm hooked after the first two episodes (going in completely blind). So seems to be a good pick.

Erik Nilsson

I'll second Baccano! it was quite a fun (unfortunately extremely short) ride.

Anna Kyruin

Space Dandy please god! Space dandy the most criminally underrated show of all time!!

Porco

Violet Evergarden and 86 I think would fit your channel (and your parameters) well. I would also recommend Terror in Resonance, and Death Parade!

Zak Moran

"Baccano!" is one of the best niche anime to fulfill your conditions, only 13 episo-- WHAT DO YOU MEAN THERE ARE THREE MORE EPISODES THAT NEVER AIRED?!? Now I have to look some stuff up for myself. Regardless, one of the most fun of all time and a deep story I think you in particular would get sucked into because you HAVE to be sucked in to avoid being too confused, and you *will* be confused because that's just how the ride is.

BlastYoBoots

Mob Psycho is an anime i recommend to everyone flcl is my personal favourite anime although its only 6 eps i love how in depth and well thought out the lore of delicious in dungeon is

Blüty

I recently finished Heavenly Delusion (Tengoku Daimakyou), a SciFi/mystery/horror/adventure anime only available on Hulu. It’s only one season of 13 episodes currently, but it was very well made and the complexity of storytelling was far greater than I imagined, up there with the best of the best animes. It deals pretty heavily with some mature sexual themes, which has likely prevented it from ever becoming mainstream. Strongly recommend it though. I’ve watched some reactions to it already with mixed results. It’s doesn’t hand-hold the audience whatsoever, so many less logical reactors missed several huge reveals / plot points entirely. Oh, and it’s the first anime I believe the dub is far superior to the sub. I’ve already watched both fully through, and the sub is very poorly translated, actually affecting a lot of the story’s plot and charm. Unfortunately I’ve only found reactions to the sub though, which is unfortunate when the translations throw off the really detail-oriented reactors. Here’s a link to the OP if you just want to see the art style / character design. The whole OP is just 2 characters walking around and running, so there’s no spoilers other than what they look like. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ir08xj0g4Dw&pp=ygUZaGVhdmVubHkgZGVsdXNpb24gb3BlbmluZw%3D%3D

Kevin

Prob not what you're looking for but: Baccano! was popular, Nozaki-kun is a comedy if you want to mix it up, and Stars Align is a drama exploring middle schooler's lives that's better than most finished anime.

Noel

Our friend asked for a non mainstream anime. Y'all out here recommending Stein's Gate... The 3rd ranked Anime on MAL, the 14th by popularity. What do y'all think mainstream means? I'm crying. XD Just because a show isn't isekai or shounen doesn't mean it isn't mainstream.

Anna Kyruin

I consider Steins;Gate 0 as the second season of Steins;Gate. Unlike Fate/Zero and UBW which can be watched independent of each other, you can't watch Steins;Gate 0 without Steins;Gate. I wouldn't exactly recommend something like Jujutsu Kaisen given a 26 episode limit, given that both seasons have 20+ episodes each. The way I understood the poll was that the series should have a maximum of 26 episodes total, not a maximum of 26 episodes per season for X seasons. I think that Steins;Gate is amazing, but I wouldn't want him to miss out on Steins;Gate 0, so I can't recommend it as something with 26 episodes or less.

Ash

Serial Experiments Lain, Houseki No Kuni, Shinsekai Yori, Promised Neverland (season 1, season 2 is debatable), Morribito

Anna Kyruin

This is a spin-off or a sequel (midquel), which means a separate show. Like fate/zero and fate/stay night ubw. If we introduce the criterion of no sequels, then a huge number of shows won't qualify, I think.

Rendy

Berserk 1997! It is 25 episode and one of the most profound anime I have ever watched. Skip the first episode tho and save it for last. The first episode is set in the future, basically an aftermath, and kindof spoils some stuff.

fun fox

Last Exile. It may have been mainstream 15 years ago but has been forgotten. There's a very interesting world to it and you could make some good speculations.

Hezer

Although Steins;Gate is my favorite anime (and by a considerable margin), I feel like it doesn't quite fit into this category due to the existence of Steins;Gate 0. Together they have 48 episodes, with 50 episodes if you include non-essential OVAs. While I would love you to watch it, I want you to know what you're getting into. My suggestion would be Serial Experiments Lain. It's a 1998 anime with 13 episodes, the genre is somewhere between analogue and digital horror. There is a constant feeling of uneasiness, and I feel like you would enjoy it a lot.

Ash

Madoka Magica Ergo Proxy

Stephan A.

I think this 7 anime may be interesting to react and analyze (plot/setting/script): 1. Fate/Zero 2. Ranking of Kings 3. Dungeon Meshi 4. Heavenly Delusion 5. Summertime Rendering 6. Made in Abyss 7. Odd Taxi

Aidos Smagulov

Banana Fish

AdVise

Steins Gate!

daragh faro

Oh shoot. Now I have something to watch lol. I don't have a suggestion for 25 eps then. I'd say Overlord but that's 40+ episodes

Enchiladas

I did that, you can find the reactions on the channel =)

M U

Chainsaw Man

Enchiladas

Steins;Gate

Buxton

Steins gate

GALLUMBAS

Steins gate is a perfect choice. Has more of a cult following than a mainstream one. I don’t know how known it is to get enough votes, but you would certainly love it

Reborn

Madoka magica(12 episodes). I think you'll like this show, although it may seem counterintuitive at first glance. Steins;gate(24 episodes) is a little more mainstream, but not more so than Monster. I want to see your reaction, because not many people can share their opinions on the many-worlds interpretation in quantum mechanics and such.

Rendy

Parasyte:The Maxim or Dororo

crayy

I actually watched it already, loved the soundrack. Also thought the live action movies were really good =)

M U

The Promised Neverland (Season 1 ONLY - Season 2 is terrible and not necessary). Link Click, Psycho-Pass, Ranking of Kings, Steins;Gate. Monster is amazing. Would love to tune in for that after Death Note.

wherethelilacsbloom

Since you like to get into characters' heads, there's one particular head I'd love to see you try and make sense of, specifically Saga of Tanya the Evil AKA Youjo Senki. That's 12 episodes plus OVA (optional) and movie (required).

Eleyvie

Re:Creators, great seaosnal anime that ended up being kinda neiche, basically westworld meets anime, 22 episodes

HAL

You absolutely have to watch Parasyte:The Maxim at some pojt point. Its not that mainstream, I guess it is semi popular, but it deals with some really cool themes, like humanitys place in nature. The manga is quite old, starting in 1985 I believe, but it has aged super well and the anime adaption is great!
