Ketil never changed. He was always this way. He wasn't kind and good to his slaves because he's a nice person. He did because it was convenient for him and caused minimum conflict, and he's a coward. He was selfish and living within the constraints of his society. He offered Thorfinn and Einar jobs on his farm after freeing them because it just results in him getting more profit regardless. He didn't offer Arnheid freedom because freeing her gives him nothing. His kindness was entirely the facade of a scared shithead.
