The characters are def not unrealistic, they are spot on. There are anime contrivances, but as the whole thing feels like a fever dream of puperty from a depressed lonely neglected boy, it kinda fits :(

2024-08-30 11:13:38 +0000 UTCIt's sure been a minute since we did an episode of this :D Re: Shinji's behavior : Watching this when I was around 19 or 20 as an undiagnosed autistic trans woman I related a lot to Shinji (but even more so to Ayanami Rei, though you haven't had much time with that character yet) I could definitely see Shinji being autistic but also what we have seen from him would fit with CPTSD from childhood neglect. Other people would say how unrealistic these characters are and I would just be confused because I related more to them than any battle shounen or shoujo romance protagonist. I remember the concept of the hedgehogs dilemma sticking with me for many years after this episode as well as a loose heuristic for negotiating stable relationships.
