Keep in mind Thors consistently claimed that he was not yet a master, that he was missing something.
Thorfinns approach isn’t perfect, everything you question is a valid one. But he doesn’t want to perpetuate violence despite his culture.
Punching that guy was satisfying, even einar says it, but it didn’t accomplish anything, pater found evidence reguardless and all they did was get themselves hurt.
We will see how thorfinn handles living the way Thors did, we saw Thors struggle with it and compromise with still punching people, but he himself wasn’t satisfied with that. It’ll be up to thorfin in the next episodes to figure that all out
But the key part is this. Thorfinn is not done growing as a character. He is never done for the entirely of this show. So don’t expect him to be unwilling to move from these positions later down the line. He has many more tests to come

This episode is where the author finally lays out the complete message for the first time in the story. Even if Thors alluded to it before, this is where we get it all laid out in front of us with all necessary context.
I like the qualms you had about the themes, as it’s certainly a massive hurdle to cross. How can one ever be fully pacifistic? Surely, violence is a necessary evil sometimes. Good thing that you haven’t even reached the halfway point of the story yet. If this arc is about establishing Thorfinn’s ideals and all the necessary themes of the narrative, the next ones are about fleshing them out, considering each nuance the core message brings with it. Hopefully season 3 will come out sometime next year, where this narrative thread really gets picked up.

I’m not even kidding when I say this episode helped change my life.
I deployed to Afghanistan with the US Army in 2010 and developed combat related PTSD. Many years later after lots of self-loathing and feelings of emptiness, I started to find a path towards the life I wanted to live… and then I saw this show. It reaffirmed a lot of the ideals I chose for myself and I regularly go back to watch it to remind myself of them. Beautiful show and reaction.
