2024-08-23 10:49:42 +0000 UTCKira is how they would pronounce the word killer in the katakana syllable system which the Japanese use to "port" words from foreign languages. It is pronounced this way because in japanese they do not have a distinct symbol for "r" and "l", instead the sound they have is somewhere in between (which is why stereotypically they presented asian characters as switching their "l"s for "r"s when they spoke). Furthermore, all consonants except for the "n" sound always have a vowel after it, so if they wanted to pronounce every single letter it would come out as Ki-re-ru, or Ki-ra-ra, which stops sounding like the word, so Kira is closer (imagine them saying killa' as a contraction). Funnily enough, your particular pronunciation when mentioning it was kinda close lol
