Fun fact, the first half of this episode was all anime original. The manga chapter started out at the point where the poem was located. You see two panels of Einar's sister and mom getting killed a couple chapters later, but his entire backstory was left ambiguous. Yukimura helped out to flesh his backstory out for the anime, and it was so extremely well done. Such a nice surprise. Love to see the love that went into this series. Also, the reason they looked at their mouths was to check their health. In the absence of our modern day sophisticated technology, the best they had to gauge one's wellbeing was to check their mouth for cavities and inflammation. Lastly, a minor detail the anime chose to skip, the farm they're in is located in Jutland, Denmark.
