Thorfinn is far and away my favorite protagonist in anime and manga, and part of it is how this duality in his character is established. Like you said, no matter how much he preaches that he wants to kill Askeladd, we the audience just don't buy it anymore. There have been way too many instances where he showed at least some kind of genuine affection towards Askeladd, no matter how faint it may be. There is at least some part of him which cares for Askeladd.

Great reaction. On the part of Bjorn's duel / death and your previous point on people seeing Valhalla before they die. Bjorn's a Viking through and through. I saw the duel as the 'honorable' way to die (according to the Vikings) - in battle, hence he will go to Valhalla. And to Bjorn, Valhalla was Askelaad's band of mercenaries. Referenced by the dialogue before the duel - how he cherished everyone and also the time spent as part of Askelaads band. So unlike the rest who see some paradise like Vinland or Avalon; Bjorn sees Askelaad's band and that is his Valhalla; and I don't think thats sad, its what he wanted both in life and what he wants to be remembered by.
Its cool to think or come up of theories of why the duel happened - I pondered on that as well when I read the manga. But over several re-reads and watching the anime as well, theres a certain beauty to the simplicity in Bjorn's character as well.
