I love details like thorkell punching a horse. In the moment its ridiculous yes, but it all comes across almost like how a Viking saga would be told. Similar stories of warriors being able to punch a rider off a horse or wrestle a bear or survive 10+ arrows and so on. Its fantastical but in a surprisingly grounded way. Also he puts the dagger in his mouth to free a hand, he could use his holster for it but its probably just easy to keep it like that. Unlike a sword which can be held one handed, Thorfinn uses both of his hands to fight (Its a big reason he has such a huge advantage, as most combat in this period wasn't suited to fight against people using two weapons at once. So while thorfinn was very proficient at this, everyone he thought was brand new to it)

The arthurian legends are interesting in that there's no "canon" story. They were a bunch of separate stories from different places and times that grew on top of each other and out of other legends. Eventually many of the stories were compiled together in various ways into books so when people talk "canon" they usually mean the first books, but the stories are much older and more farspread than that. The stories, being from different peoples and times, did not always match each other totally and ideas like "what is avalon" differed story by story and author by author. In a sense, modern stories like Vinland Saga are true inheritors of the Arthurian mythos because they are using it and adding to it the same way people did 800 years ago.
To add to the connection here even further, while generally most people consider the first true arthurian legends to have been around 800 years ago, the stories themselves actually bear a strong resemblance to the Eddas of the vikings, hinting that Arthurian legends are rooted in oral tradition viking stories.

The depths of mixed feelings I have for Askeladd are insane. You really want to hate him because you've seen all the things he's done, but also these are things that seemingly everyone is doing. Everyone is out here warring with each other and he's not any different. But also he has so many good sides. He honored his agreements with Thors and let everyone go. He never once tried to kill Thorfinn and has always been there, sometimes standoffishly to give Thorfinn the chance to leave, training him and helping him. He led his armies with the best of his abilities and they abandoned him not the other way around. He had a dream given to him by his mother and tried for so long to see it happen.
Just, what a phenomenally written character.
