3 Body Problem 1x08

really cool 1st season. Tell me what movies you would be interested in!

3 Body Problem 1x08

Comments

By the way, please read the books. They are the best sci-fi I have read, so many great concepts.

Interesting, thanks for clarifying a bit on that! I just had heard cells get destroyed, but this clears it up more. =) Pretty wild that people are frozen somewhere, acutally. I would have loved a ten year time jump and then them having the tech fit concentrated efforts, but I guess that would have been impractical for a show =)

I will comment with my very limited knowledge on cryonics, I'm a molecular biologist so not my field. We can easily freeze single cells to - 150 C° and revive them, we use DMSO as a cryopreservant to prevent formation of ice crystals which would destroy the cell membranes. This works great, we even have cell stocks from the 90s here which we could easily thaw and work with. However, we are talking about immortailzed cell lines here, which can practically infinitely divide. A lot of them die during thawing (DMSO is quite toxic) and I think that is where the problem would arise doing that with humans. I don't think a human can take losing approximately half their cells during the unfreezing process. I just did a quick Google search on this and there are actually already a few hundred bodies which are cryopreserved, they actually drain the bodies of liquid and infuse them with cryopreservant (not sure if they also use DMSO). So the real problem is returning them to life. But I wouldn't say that it's not achievable at all, humanity is advancing so much and maybe it will happen someday :)

Also, movie recommendation: Underwater on Netflix... Surprisingly a great movie... Sort of horror sci-fi.

Thank you for these reactions, they were very informative and interesting. To me the show is amazing, and one of the best premises I've ever seen on screen - the show goes into the humanity situation when learning about an impending doom 400 years away... That is why I'm not concerned about not having time jumps. But I'm pretty sure that they will do at least some time jumps... Don't think about it like a "normal" sci-fi show, where the only interesting thing they can depict is how the humans challenge an ongoing invasion... Most of the interesting stuff comes from the psychology and sociology of humanity while waiting for the "inevitable"

1:08:30 way past escape velocity, even that of the sun, this thing is going into interstellar space, just not as fast or in the direction they wanted

HAL

by the time the capsule would collide with a nuke its already detonated thats the clever thing, not just hte sail but the strands holding it are probably thick bundles of fibres and they're long so they cna take in a ton of elastic energy and spread out the sudden detonation of an uke into a slightly smoother acceleration

HAL

55:30 dampen, primarily - you need water turning into steam to absorb sound or else the engine noise reflecting off the gorund will pop the rockets fuel tanks like balloons

HAL

she probably calcualted off measured weight, if you need something really really precise you don't calcualte mass you measure it, even if it SHOULD be calculatable it mgiht always be off by a tiny bit

HAL

the sophons tried to kill him probably for some reason probably because of something he's likely going to do at some point in the future according to them he barely survived which is rare thats qualification enough

HAL

I mean if they expect you to do something useful with that authority I guess its fair if you divert resources roughyl equivalent to any decently paid position so you don't have to worry about a regular job while doing it and you have some safe place to work from I mean they're already giving him bodyguards, he never said that was part of his plan or anything

HAL

I mean just like with a regualr rocket launch you'd probably want a control system that cna react to deviations within certain margins and then you jsut have to plan within that level of accuracy so if the sail goes an absolutely tiny bit off course the following nukes should havel ittle maneuvering thrusters so they're still on its course and their timers should be adjusted based on how far away precisely it is so the nanosecond precise timing probably starts once the sail has reached a certian predetermined distance from the next nuke and with parameters based on its current speed but of course you have to time somewhat ahead to take delays into account, its actually pretty similar to the challenge of building a nuke in the first place where each part of the detonation ahs to be so precisely tiemd to each other that you have to take every millimeter of wire length into account

HAL

they'll probably find sub-buzzwords related to planetary defence eventually

HAL

it does seem a bit like season 1 basically introduces the characters that become important later and so they each kindof get invovled in the plot one after another

HAL

On Saul as a Wallfacer: Last episode they were talking about keeping the Sophons busy, and by trying to kill him, the San Ti have demonstrated that they THINK Saul knows something valuable from his talk with Ye Wenije. So I think the PDC is just hoping the San Ti spend their resources on him.

No, as far as I know it is more dangerous how the birthrates now are than they ever were (afaik). Our children will be f**d because of retirement systems collapsing and not enough workers (again, how I currently see it).

I think you may have missed their explanation why Saul was chosen as a Wallfacer. They know the San Ti want to kill him so he must know something. The San Ti became interested in him following his talk with Ye. The movie, The Martian, did a good job showing mission control when a mission goes wrong and remaining calm and working the problem. My take was Auggie was selling the tech to the village, helps explain how she had the device, perhaps. You may know, the book had far fewer characters. They got split for the series. This series is different from the book. I won't compare them, they are two different things. I like both and also the Chinese series although 30 episodes was a lot. Also, I am glad explosions didn't go "BOOM" in a vacuum! Thank you for reacting to this series. It was a fascinating journey and I learned a few things. I hope you will react to season two, whenever that happens. Cheers.

7:00 You say we know the world is going to be worse in some ways and people aren't doing anything about it Isn't overpopulation one of the reasons the world will be worse so the people not having children are actually helping the rest of our children?
