Loving the reactions as always. Don’t miss the post credit scene for 4x4 .

Blue Haired Marleyan: Check your privilege Eldian oppressor! Your Eldian supremacy apologetics is just designed to minimize the atrocities committed by your Eldian colonizer ancestors against the Marleyan people. 😝

Annie saying she was Kenny's daughter is a lie. Annie was just scouting out Kenny because she was gathering intel and probably realized he was connected to the King somehow.

next few episodes are going to be awsome :D. Next episode i think has an Important Post credit, don't miss is

I think its kinda interesting how marley uses like a two sided indoctrination strategy with their racist/national ideology on one side and the intense competition/pride between warrior candidates on the other which kinda recontextualizes the season 1 training when he's on the other side of the conflict but in the same kind of training/competition again and relating to the people there

HAL

wiping out a small nation in a weapons test has some tragic real world parallels

HAL

its like 5-10 shows in one because once or twice per season/part you get new information that reframes everything up to that point if you rewatch it

HAL

probably but its also brids in general "pecking" is just "picken" but "pieken" can also be "to poke" or "to prick" or "to lightyl stab something"

This stretch of episodes in S4 cemented Reiner as my favourite character in AoT. The characterisation is just absolutely fantastic, and it was this stretch of episodes that made me a true fan of the show. Even after everything I've watched, I still eagerly anticipate these episodes (and the upcoming episodes) as my favourite part of AoT. Who knew it'd be the sad, lonely life of Adult Reiner reflecting on his past & his identity which would truly sell me on the show.

Interesting note you did about Berthold seeing first time close dead person and how it affects him. I never thought about it. We don't know if he was in war as warrior candidates to see close someone dying, since he is colossal titan he can see only destruction he did after transformation and maybe dead people he never spoke to.

A very cool subtle detail: Bertoldt’s position when he’s sleeping in this episode is exactly the position of the Hanged Man Tarot card. Bertoldt also has dreams of the Hanged Man that told them his story. There’s tons of different interpretations as to how Bert’s character arc symbolizes the Hanged Man card. One I’ve seen is that it symbolizes paradox (strongest Titan vs. meek and shy Bert). Another meaning is something like “fully giving in” and “guilt”, which have obvious similarities as well.

It's so sad comparing the greatings Reiners got after a mission with confetti and smiles compared to what most of the scouts had.

I can't believe you forgot your favorite Thomas 😉 He's the one with the sideburns you were trying to remember in the scene where Bertholdt is sleeping.

Such an amazing episode, loved your reaction and hearing your insightful thoughts. Reiner’s story is so tragic and as you said it makes so much sense why he develops a personality issue. In Marley, his identity is a slave to/heavily influenced by his mothers fucked up form of love. In Paradis, you said that’s where he finds himself - and while it’s partially true as that’s where he sees himself in Eren and has the epiphany that these are people (not devils) just like him - I’d argue he still didn’t have a proper opportunity to truly find himself there either due to shame (for possibly not truly being picked for a Warrior based on his own merit) and especially the guilt he feels for Marcel’s death. “Reiner is dead. If we need Marcel, then I’ll be Marcel.” From that point on he’s essentially emulating Marcel; if you remember in the previous episode, Porco/Galliard is annoyed and angry with seeing how Reiner acted via Ymir’s memories when he confronts Reiner on pretending to be a reliable guy, “I’d say you were imitating my brother!” Isayama is incredible. Anyway, looking forward to the next one!! There’s a scene after the credits you won’t wanna miss :)

By the way, after breaking the first wall, Annie, Berthold and Reiner end up in the same refugee camp as Eren, Armin and Mikasa. We know this because we can see Annie, Berthold and Reiner, as children, in episode 1x02. In general, rewatching season 1 with the information that we now have is such a different experience. There are so many clues and foreshadowing sprinkled through the whole show, it is really amazing.

Another one of Isayama's great story beats. Once again everything from the first three seasons is recontextualized. The background from this episode changes almost all of the interactions we see between Bert, Annie and Reiner throughout. It's interesting that this is the point where you realized fully how young they were when they broke down the wall. I had that revelation first in 2x6 when Reiner says "We were only children, we didn't know anything" before turning. I immediately put together that he, Mikasa, Eren, and Armin are about the same age, so they would have been similar ages when the wall was destroyed. There's a special place in hell for people who use child soldiers for their political goals.

One of my fav Eps. Even if its just talking mostly it's like a pinnacle of recontextualization. For example: The old man Berthold always referred to(S1Episode 4already) hanged under an apple tree. (Berthold's musical theme in aot is called "Appleseed"). The old man told them, that he left behind his children as soon as he heard the titans come and he regretted it so much that he hanged himself on this apple tree in his isolation. Bertholds friends(the scouts) always yapped about bertholds weird sleeping positions refering them with the weather that is about to accure on the same day. The position in wich berthold was in that situation was the position of the "hanged-man" a popular Tarot-Card. They said it means the weather will become foggy today. The old man, when reiner and bert found him hanged on an apple-tree in dense fog. This is just (right proven)interpretation of 6seconds that accure in this episode that prioritizes "recontextualization"

Woodpecker! Is that possibly the english name of the bird you were looking for talking about pieck.

It’s funny how SWS didn’t recognize younger Reiner and Zeke :) It seems, that Kenny — Annie scene shows us how close they come with gathering intel about royal family, because Kenny was leader of secret royal security squad and they found him. By the way, Annie the only person to confront all three Ackermans and still managed to survive 😎 It seems, one of the main ideas of this episode is to show how everybody were all just kids trying to do what they think is right. Reiner wanted to save humanity and make up for what he saw as the wrongs of his people by fighting the "island devils" and reuniting with his dad. Similarly, Eren and his friends wanted to protect the world from the titans. It shows that in war, individual people, even though they're enemies, often have more in common than we/they realize. It all comes down to beliefs, being influenced by others, and wanting revenge, which keeps the cycle going. Thank you for reaction!
