Actually the guy who you thought was the other guy (if he had a moustache) is allegedly based more on Mads Mikkelsen

and they realized that he probably knows which is what upsets them

Already been mentioned a bit in the comments here but the dinner scene is so sad. Reiner wasn't lying about them, or trying to make the Paradis people look worse. Reiner was having one of his split personality moments. The one personality calling them DEVILS and MONSTERS and then the other describing their monstrous acts as "this one girl took too much potatoes" and "this guy was forgetful". He couldn't think of a single genuinely monstrous thing anyone on the island had done but the Warrior part of him is still vying for control and acceptance so it's inflating regular human faults to justify his actions. Meanwhile the people at the table who *genuinely* believe these people to be monsters aren't hearing anything that actually justifies what they believe, and furthermore what he's saying in an area with thin walls in an encampment sounds very much like treason.

The "Not in this room" line wasn't so much saying he had a secret room, as subtly hinting to the warriors that they were being bugged. That's why Reiner interrupted Galliard's opposition with blind patriotism, he was keeping Galliard's feelings of dissent from the marleyan superiors listening in

Another example of casually hiding in plain sight

By the way, there was a guy in episode 3x20 that was not made into a Titan but rather thrown out the wall to be eaten by them. His last name was Grice, which is the same last name as Falco and Colt.

Yeap, as it has been mentioned before, the walls in Liberio are very thin and people there have to be very careful about what they say. So it was very worrisome for Reiner's mom to hear his son talking about the "Devils of Paradise" as if they were normal people with regular pitfalls. So, she made sure to close the window and spew the appropriate propaganda just in case someone was listening. (And probably also because she believes in it.)

This episode and the next one really raised the story for me. The writing is just magnificent.

And now you know one of the reasons that the cart titan is my favorite titan :D

Reiner dinner scene - he actually humanises the 'island devils' by spouting what he remembers / spins as their 'worst traits' which turn out to be common traits of PEOPLE (which he referred to them as, not island DEVILS), thus in fact they are really not nearly as bad as Marley make them out to be. He knows he must frame them as horrible devils with his tales and say the most despicable things he can but in reality what he is saying really isn't all that scary or abnormal, hence the reaction of his mother

That dinner scene with Reiner is one of my favorite character moments in AOT. You can see he is trying so hard to find bad things to say about the Scouts, to the point he is resorting to spin an innocuous tale about the Sasha potato incident to something horrific lol.

I’m still catching up to your reactions, but this is one of my favorite episodes, despite having almost no action. The writing, especially around Reiner, is just unparalleled with so many layers. I love how they say so much while actually speaking very little and often indirectly.

My Toasty Toast

Eren Kruger, secret leader of eldian resistance, hide from Marley about royal blood of Dina, Grisha spoke about it at the end of season 3, so they don’t know about source of Zeke special powers, like ability to transform eldians in pure titans by shout. Colt pointed that it looks like Founder titan power Pieck is very cool person, honestly, she is my favorite character from Warriors squad :) It’s seems, that Reiner caught on with Zeke's “not in this room” line. He realized that they are being listened to. So when Galliard was about to say something reckless, he cut him off. So, Reiner kinda saved Galliard's ass there. Thank you for reaction!

I think all Eldian military wear yellow actually. Not an important distinction tho.

Anna Kyruin

You read Reiner correctly. He doesn't want Gabi, his cousin, to inherent the Armored Titan. And yes the holders of one of the 9 titans wear red armbands. Yellow is for a Titan initiate candidates and grey is for a regular average Eldian. Lastly the reason why Gabi's parents, and family members, are proud of her and Reiner is because they truly believe they are atoning for the sins of their Eldian ancestors who the Blue Haired Marleyan's accuse of being conquerors and colonizers that committed atrocities against their ancestors. And yes the Eldians in the mainland see themselves as being better then the "Island Devils" because they view themselves as actively atoning for the sins of the Eldian Empire and their ancestors.

As others have already nicely pointed out, I also agree that Reiner was merely warning Falco not to express those thoughts publicly to protect him and his family. You made a nice speculation that perhaps Reiner was very prideful and similar to Gabi as a child. Since you've already recorded episode 3, you're right, he WAS. Episode 3 adds so much context and makes it clear, but there was evidence in this episode of Reiner being completely disillusioned with naive ideas about what it means to be a Warrior. On the docks you mention he almost feels like a father figure to the Warrior candidates and then we get a quick flashback of this moment reminding him of Galliard, Bertholdt, Marcel, Annie, and himself at that age in which he thinks/says "wait!" He unfortunately knows all too well the suffering and possible death awaiting the current Warrior candidates; so while it's fair to initially attribute his interaction with Falco on the train to things like pride and his mental health, I think it's safe to conclude he was merely warning and protecting him upon a closer look. Another, somewhat more intangible thing, is despite witnessing Falco have to horridly recite a pledge to Marley to Reiner during that conversation, there's a strangely calm, melancholic, and slightly hopeful atmosphere that contrasts what we've just heard (given by the shots of Gabi and chants of admiration for Gabi, lack of ost, etc.) and is punctuated with Reiner putting a hand on Falco's shoulder in which he tells him, "you have to rescue Gabi from the dark future that awaits us" followed by the soft "choo-ing" of the train. He's essentially putting himself on equal grounds as Falco and is acknowledging his awareness and big heart as he urges him to save Gabi from her ignorance. Another thing I want to talk about is the dinner scene with Reiner. I think it's layered nature is so brilliant. First, we transition into the scene with Gabi’s “BOOM,” a direct parallel to the Marley military officer who yelled the same thing to make the Eldian soldiers with PTSD fall down in the previous scene; a clever juxtaposition to show the cycle of hate and discrimination is being passed down. When Reiner starts talking about his time on Paradis, he opens with calling everyone there a ‘savage and heartless devil,’ yet the best example he could think of to try and continue his act is of Sasha offering to share the potato she took. Your reaction resembling something like 'Oh, the humanity!' was funny/great :) (btw, the piece she offered was indeed NOT EVEN CLOSE TO HALF....truly devil worthy :p). Then he proceeds to describe normal human behaviors we routinely see in people like our family and friends. His family is shocked to hear them described as regular people and not devils. The window shutters timely break open with the sound of lightning and rain as he finishes. Gabi asks, “what do you mean there were all sorts of ‘people’ (not devils) there?” But Reiner’s mother appropriately closes the shutters (as we know from the end of the episode, Marley may be listening in. It also may symbolize any thoughts arising from Reiner's story are dangerous in Marley and are as if you're letting a storm into your house) and reinforces the brainwashed view of them simply being “island devils.” I think there's two reasons Reiner attempted to talk in a manner like his mother would. I like how you immediately recognized there could be many reasons he was doing as such. The first I've already mentioned, to keep up appearances and stay out of danger, as Marley can always be listening in to make sure the Warriors behave/don't rebel. The second reason which breaks my heart is that he simply wants to be able to talk to someone about his immense guilt he feels regarding his friends. Gabi even offers Reiner an out from talking about his time on Paradis by telling her father that his nephew wouldn’t want to talk about that. He could have taken her up on that, but he doesn’t. He WANTS to talk about it in a genuine nature, yet he knows CAN'T as it would endanger his family. This is why we get his imbalanced story of claiming they were island devils but only giving examples of regular people and behaviors. Reiner cares about the friends he made on Paradis but feels overwhelming guilt for his actions causing them so much pain, to the point where we know it literally caused him to have a split personality in order to try and cope with his guilt. Anyway, thanks for the great reaction and thoughts, I'm super excited for the next episode as it's definitely up there among my favorites!

Regarding Reiner talking to Falco on the train about Gabi. I think we have to look a bit deeper here. Reiner needs to uphold appearances, but I think specifically he was warning Falco not to say things like that out loud because it could get him and his family turned into titan weapons. They very often have to speak in layers of obfuscation that will sound like obeisance to the Marleyans or risk a fate worse than death. I think when Reiner says "you have to save Gabi from the dark fate that awaits both of us" that is him being honest and risking speaking his mind to Falco because that statement is definitely something one could interpret as insulting the honor of inheriting one of the nine.

Anna Kyruin

I think the reason Reiner spoke that way to Falco in the train is because he cares for him and wants to make sure he does not express his true thoughts to others as to keep himself safe. Almost like he was a speaking to him as if he was a Marley commander. In my opinion he was just checking to see if Falco knew he should show agreement to the propaganda. It could be deeper as its hard to read Reiner's mind at this point.
