Attack on Titan 2x12

Here we go! Hope you can clear up the dialogue part as well.

Attack on Titan 2x12

Comments

This is one of my favorite episodes in the series and I'll try to clear up the dialogue in the later half of my comment. There's a really common copy/paste comment you'll see on reactions to this episode that the look Hannes has as he's dying is one of satisfaction. Something like "he failed to kill it but because of that he knows he made the right choice not fighting it the day Shiganshina fell and saving Eren and Mikasa instead". I personally don't agree with this interpretation at all. The entirety of the allied MP and Scout forces are surrounded and losing very badly, Eren has no gear and can't transform and Mikasa is too injured to fight and they can't outrun titans on foot. So his death seals what he believes is Eren and Mikasa's doom. My interpretation of his look and last thoughts are "I really am...useless to the very end...I'm so sorry, kids..." I feel like Eren's laughing fit breakdown is also cumulative from all the shit he's gone through on top of failing Hannes. Eren is only fifteen years old and he has experienced all of the following over the course of six years: *Stabbed two people to death *Witnessed his mother getting snapped and then munched. *Seemingly abandoned by his father. *Rushed into battle and indirectly got his squad killed. *Had his arm and leg bitten off and swallowed by a titan. *Was held at cannon point and forced to "prove he was human." *Got people killed by taking too long to gain control of his titan form in Trost. *Witnessed Levi squad and a dozen or so others get destroyed by the Female Titan. *Betrayed by no less than THREE people that I have no doubt he would have died for before the reveal. *Was forced to witness Hannes, his secondary father figure, who he hated for being useless before eventually coming around to respecting and caring for get killed by the same titan that ate his mother. Eren never really talks about a lot of these and in the case of the stabbing he was remorseless. But looking at these things objectively it's no wonder he completely snaps. Any ONE of these things could give a normal person PTSD for life. I understand that the shift between Hannes' death and what Mikasa believed to be her last words was hard for you to digest and I understand why you got confused but I still find it a bit unfortunate you weren't able appreciate it in the moment. It's true that what she lists off are things that he's done in the past. But what Eren was telling himself was "you're as useless as you've always been" and "I still can't do anything at all." implying he feels like he's never made a difference. Which is why Mikasa demonstrates that the world was made better for her by him even if it was in the past and even if it was just the smallest amount of change in the grand design. She tells him that he did make a difference with his life. Again, it's a final comfort before what was supposed to be the end. I appreciate Eren's choice of reciprocation as well. Mikasa made it clear she loved Eren in a romantic way in her confession. But Eren's response can be interpreted either way. He doesn't outright reject Mikasa entirely. Only rejecting her kiss which was the idea of accepting and waiting for the end. He instead stands up for what he thinks is the last time and makes a promise to always protect her and love her even if the type of love isn't specified. If that means fistfighting a titan than so fucking be it. He doesn't care anymore if all the fight he's capable of is "pathetic" and "meaningless" in the end. Because it means something to her. The rage and desperation he puts into his screams as he protects Mikasa make me cry every single time. Makes me feel like he could disintegrate the thing with just his hatred. Hopefully this helps clears things up and helps on your rewatch when you're finished with the series!

That is true, but Eren said "nbothing changed since my mother got eaten", so it was about his mothers death :D

we always forget mikasa already had a family. Then she lost the family she found with the jaegers. Now all she has is eren and armin

others already explained the scene. But you must realize, although mikasa had the scarf before erens mom died. BUT she got that scarf from eren after HER parents died..

When Mikasa said that what Eren said isn't true, she wasn't referring to when eren said nothing changed, she was referring to how eren said how he's "still as useless as ever" and how he still cant do anything. Basically she's saying that eren was never useless, and that he was always important and helpful to her. Also she probably thought they were about to die there so that's why she said all that despite it seeming like a weird time to do so

Did you actually not realize that the Monkey Titan is a Human Same as Reiner and Berthold and that the person standing on top of it is the Human controlling the Titan also Mikasa was talking about how Eren Changed her life as opossed to Even not changing

Amazing take, you have a great outlook on things and I completely agree.

Hi! I can understand your frustration about Hannes, but I don’t think you were fair to both Eren and Mikasa in this episode. About Eren: As you already noticed, characters are dying in this show, and sometimes indeed because of the actions of others. In this case, however, I would say that "Go fuck yourself Eren" is too harsh. Eren is a teenager who was desperately biting chunks of flesh off his hands and doing anything he could to save a person he cared about, just to see that person being eaten alive. The reason why Eren couldn’t transform is because he was still recovering from the previous wounds inflicted by Reiner. Maybe you remember the scene when Reiner told Eren he couldn't transform because he was healing (when Eren tried to bite his healing hand in the Forrest of Giant Trees). Now we have a confirmation of that. I don’t even think it is fair to agree with his hatred for himself either (when he says nothing has changed and he is as useless as before). Now he can turn into a titan and kill dozens of titans. However, the experience of having the power but still being unable to save your "family" for sure was traumatic for him but again, not his fault. About Mikasa: As you noticed situation was fucked. Scouts were dying all around them, and Titans were surrounding them. Eren was without his ODM gear, and he couldn’t turn. Misasa was injured by the Titan from the previous episode. They were both useless in the situation, and they thought they were going to die. Misasa reassured Eren that some things indeed changed (It did, at least in my opinion. He just couldn't save one life, and that can happen no matter how prepared or powerful you are. Even if not, I don’t think it's out of the question to try to reassure the most important person to you who’s psychotically laughing at blaming himself for his uselessness). About what she said - Mikasa surely believed they might die then and there she just wanted to express her gratitude for Eren before that. I don’t think it's strange to say your final words to a loved one (or your family) before getting brutally eaten by a titan. And finally about Eren’s switch in attitude: I wouldn’t say Mikasa reassured him. She had completely given up herself at that moment. Hearing her words (yeah, the scarf stuff) Eren refused to give up. Not because of what she said (she was literally in the "let's just die here" mindset), but because of who he is. His reply (about wrapping that scarf around her as many times as she wants) while standing up meant that no matter how dire the situation is and that he is about to die he is still not willing to accept that. He's going to fight (remember Mikasa's flashback) no matter how useless it might be. That’s why he desperately punched "the smiling titan". I would say when we get more context later on in the series you will start to appreciate the scene even more because it's one of the key moments for Eren's character and a key moment in the story. P.S. About the origin of Titans: Yeah, it was not that hard to figure out that pure Titans (all Titans) are former humans. Some characters already speculated that in the anime. But only now do we get a final confirmation. All titans are human. I could add more here (because from some clues you could’ve figured out even more stuff that would make more sense) but more reveals and confirmations are coming in season 3. Remember if something doesn’t make sense in AOT it will most likely make more sense in the future. I hope you will like season 3! I would say it's even better :)) P.P.S. Oh, and you MUST rewatch this anime later on at your own time. I would say the best time for that is after you finish all of it because only then you can fully appreciate everything and get the most out of the rewatch.

The importance of Mikasa's speech I think is multilayered. 1. It's important because Mikasa is Mikasa. A girl who is intelligent, fast, powerful, fearless. At this moment she is scared; so scared that she's given up. She knows she can't win and has decided to just tell Eren her feelings because it's her last chance, and Eren knows that's what she's saying. She's saying this is the end. Eren is *not* strong, smart, or anything she is, but his drive is that when even she fails he'll be there to hold her hand and fight. When it's cold and dark he'll give his only scarf to keep her warm. When she's given up and everyone else has too, that's when Eren isn't allowed to give up anymore. 2. It's important because Mikasa is human. I mean a microrepresentation of all of humanity in one person. When literally everything is going to hell there is still a small bit of beauty right next to him. She loves him for existing. He's telling her that nothing matters and nothing has changed, and she is literally saying "if nothing matters then why do I love you?" From another point of view you could say that Eren asked the question "is life worth living if it's all pain?" and she answered "It's not all pain", and if it's not all pain then humanity deserves to live. If he gives up on her in this moment he is giving up on all of humanity.

The part was within the ending 😂 there is literally 0 point not to watch the ending when you already finished the season.

daragh faro

Mikasa thought that was the end for them it seems, their situation was very dire. So it makes sense that she would try express her feelings.

daragh faro

but Eren wasn't even fully healed in this scene. His fingers were still healing when he tried to turn. He just wasn't done healing. That's why he couldn't turn.

Monsi7

There are two things I can think of that I can think of why Eren can't turn. The other one would be a spoiler so I won't say it. The other one is maybe a far reach. But maybe Erens stamina is not enough. Remember when Reiner said he won't be able to turn because he's healing. Maybe there is like a s9me kind of gauge and it needs time to refill the titan power enough to make him turn. And since his body used most of it's reserve healing him, He was not able to change, cause he no longer have enough titan power to turn and it needs more time to fill. for Mikasa Eren said he is Useless and mikasa told him the reason she is not useless and I think maybe she was feeling hopless maybe she was thinking it was the end for them since she is injured and can't fight eren can't turn and they are sorrounded by titans so she decided to pour her heart out on what she thought was their final moment and say the cheesiest thing and I think she tried to lean in for a kiss.
