Thanks! =) I was surprised how well my tangent in the beginning fit with all of it as well. This was probably the best written episode with regards to examining a character and their theme. Also, look out for the moon, the weather and the sun as well during your rewatch ;)

I really need to play a dragon quest game, heard they are awesome and never had the time. =) So they do kind have "classes", that is interesting. When I went into the anime, I expected the German names to be just class names, actually (like in Goblin Slayer). Glad they were far more. =)

I appreciate this episode on a whole new level now - I’m introducing a friend to Frieren later this week, and I’m actually looking forward to rewatching these episodes as they’ve been recontextualized for me. And there’s also no excuse now for me to not know the meaning of the word “sein.”

2024-01-10 05:50:30 +0000 UTCSo I actually meant to mention this last episode with the talks of "why is Himmel called a hero" but it actually works here too talking about the priests. In a lot of modern fantasy and isekai fantasy anime you'll see they're based on tropes from both D&D and modern RPG/MMORPG video games. Frieren by contrast is based on tropes of older japanese RPGs, specifically the Dragon Quest series. In Dragon Quest there are several "classes" of character called vocations. There are many of them and it differs games to game, but Mage, Priest, Martial Artist, and Hero are among these vocations. Being the Hero class defines not just your title but also your abilities. Interestingly not only can the main character be this class, but other characters can become Heroes by taking the appropriate prerequisites as they level and multiclass.
