Closing Time [7-12]

[Edited: Originally posted as pages 1-6]

Or

The band goes shopping

A.K.A. “A secret third thing I'm not gonna reveal just yet to not spoil the whole thing”

Pages 1 to 6 "To Be Continued"

Based on true events.

As in, that whole story about the instant ramen being made out of plastic, my mother actually believed that and wouldn't let me eat it as a kid. The difference is that I still ate it when she wasn't around.

That is one of the very few aspects in which I'm cooler than RJ.

The Worn Down Children have the night off after a small gig playing at a town fair. Will they be able to hang out today? Let's find out.

So here is the first chunk of that big comic I had been talking about. I'm actually doing it. This one excites me because it actually has a b plot of sorts.

Here's just the first 6 pages for now to set out the”plot” I'm actually trying to figure out how I should post the rest.

I could post them in batches like this but that’d make wait times longer, or individually as soon as I have them and that could be fun but there's the issue that they're always subject to changes or edits. Like page 3 and 6 here that originally was just page 4 before it got split.

If you have a preference let me know.

Originally this comic was supposed to be a direct sequel of Band on the run, hence the presence of Tak and the summer clothes, but after I developed further I grew unsure if that works anymore. So I left that as a bit ambiguous. I could still retcon it to make that the case but for the time being I think this happens a couple of months or so earlier.

A thing that worried me was the setting, being a grocery store it could have drove me to madness with all the things I'd had to draw. But I tried out this minimalist UPA like style I specifically took out of some Pepe Le Pew shorts I was watching the other day and It worked. At least for these comic.

A fun thing about this one is that you actually see Tony tell a joke that bombs hard not only once but twice. Though he's happy that Tak is there to help him out with that.

Another thing we can finally see is RJ and Zara hanging out beyond just a still picture. I mean, we had seen some of that before but we finally see it again.

Also, Lil being something of a personal space enjoyer which, speaking about “based on true events”, that whole thing with Lil in the Apple (Apeach?) store, is basically a thing that happened to me the last time I visited one of those. I designed that Otter guy to be like Lil’s Nemesis or something. The closed eyes, while a common trope, I specifically took from Bleach’s character Gin Ichimaru, cause in my head they sound the same (Latin American dub).

For the first part of Zara and RJ talking in the car, she originally was going to be talking about the Phil Collins’ “In the air tonight” urban legend of him watching a man letting another drown but while making it I remembered that family guy had already done that exact bit. So I made a tweet and a post on blue sky asking for cool music related urban legends and got a bunch of cool ones, like Klatuuh secretly being the Beatles and such, but in the end I went with Avril Lavigne’s replacement by a double in 2004 cause that feels like one Zara would know well.

I also made an alternative version of that page where she talks about the Elvis Twins theory which I'm surprised no one mentioned.

I'm still not sure which one I like more.

I'll keep working on this but for a moment I'm going to take a small pause because I got to draw some spooks.

Haha, I indeed didn't recognize the "both is good" nod they were doing but now I can't unsee it! So I guess that means Tak and Tony are Miguel and Tulio, and Davo is Chel. X3

Honestly yeah, it could work for her character. And on the Davo thing, let's just say that's a plot point I've considered before. Though yeah, at least it's not like he's drinking alone most of the time. After all, Tony and Tak are doing the "both is good" meme at the beer brands Davo has on his hands. (I knew that wasn't going to be recognizable as the meme without the text or another frame but I still put it. Lol.) I wanna make a bunch of fake in universe brands so I can do a collage of logos one of these days.

Yeah, even if it was supposed to be just a generic "no sense of personal space"-gag that's definitely how the page came across to me, making it a major mood whiplash to the rest of the comic and I was surprised that you apparently went there...though now that it's been brought up, making Lil's otter nemesis into a Pastry Pete-type of villain could be a good possibility of exploring heavier subjects as long as its handled properly. :) The same applies to Davo's drinking even if it has been chilled lately, I've indeed noticed that he's been the one with the most drinks in hand and if it's really related to his issues then him developing a drinking problem down the line would be fitting...then again I could be overthinking things, given Tony's and Tak's approving nods to him holding up the beers, maybe the trio enjoys a bit of recreational drinking in addition to weed. :3 Hehe, using Ham Panther might cause some legal issues when it becomes a web series so that was a good move. XD OTOH I like the noticeable trend of using parodies of real world references (yay Sgt Pepper soda!) and look forward to seeing many more throughout the comic. ;)

Huh, that Lil thing is a very interesting reading of the page. I had thought of it as an introvert/extrovert kind of thing but I guess I hadn't considered the gender dynamic at play. Lol. You do make a good point that Lil maybe felt harassed at that moment. It makes sense. You did make me reconsider the meaning of that page. On a less serious note, yeah, Davo is definitely the more avid drinker of the group. If you check my galleries you'll notice he's the one you see with a drink on his hand more often though not so much for it to really be obvious Also I've chilled that aspect a bit lately for no other reason but because I kind of forgot lol. I don't think has a drinking problem but, who knows, he could later… Also, You’re joking but I was incredibly close to namimg the place Ham Panther. There was also a draft of the script where it was a convenience store named Ozzo (Bear misspelled in spanish) parodying a mexican store chain named Oxxo

Heck yeah, I'm very happy to see that the comic's story is finally taking off! I don't mind waiting longer for batches like this to be released, that way we don't get left wondering what will happene after each individual page. :D Love seeing the sweet and funny moment of Zara&RJ casually hanging out of course, and the same holds true for Tony making Tak laugh even (or especially) with hard-bombing jokes. ^_^ Also I get the feeling Davo liking beer is gonna become a running theme...And that finally answers the question of exactly where Tony got the Christmas Nerf gatling gun, at the Ham Panther-I mean WhaleMart :D Lastly, at the risk of being the ghost at the feast, before reading about the origin of Lil being a personal space enjoyer in the Peach/Apeach (...iPeach?) store subplot, I immediately interpreted the interaction with her Ichimaru-like otter nemesis as her dealing with being stalked/harassed by a creep, not helped by her very disturbed look in the last two panels being the last we see of her and the aforementioned Ichimaru-like creepy appearance (esp. since I never saw Bleach), and thinking you were starting to explore some Tuca & Bertie-level heavy stuff...then I read the description, tho now I'm afraid I can't get that reading out of my head ;P

Morlund

Thank You!

I love this in so many levels.... I really like that you're getting into a comic project, almost feels like we're watching a television series and all that ^^ Keep doing it man, you're doing great :v
