Band On The Run

Or.

"If you're in a rock band and you're not getting banned from hotels, are you really on a rock band?"

Or the pool episode.

Well The story so far. The Worn Down Children got a gig at a small festival by the beach. Last time they did that they spent too much and this time they were running a bit low on cash so they stayed at a more or less cheap hotel that lets you camp in the garden for less and Take tagged along this time cause she had come up with a plan to swim at a pool for free.

And in her defense, it had worked before.

Got to break the rules from time to time. These guys are rockstars after all. More rock that stars at the moment but still…

This comic was inspired by the fact that I also kept some of the bracelets from a nice hotel I went to once with my family thinking that if I ever came back I could stay somewhere else cheaper and swim for free.

I'm also sure that that could end up more or less like in this comic except worse because I don't run really fast.

Also don't feel bad for the guard, he was corrupt. Feel bad for the band as had Zara waited a bit more, they would know bribing him was an option.

This one was really fun to work in. Though it took me a bit longer than usual. You can see I got to experiment a bit with the layout. At 7 pages is the longest comic I’ve done. It originally was 4 pages but I felt it was hard to follow so I expanded it and I'm glad I did. That way I got to add things like a Wally cameo or that little Tak/Tony moment. That one wasn't planned at all, even as I was drawing it it felt like it came up by accident. Just imagine it was improvised by the actors.

As usual with me there are 2 versions o a page, this time the last one, cause I couldn't decide which one I like best. One I think flows better, but I really like RJ’s reaction on the other one. Like, even while being the usual voice of reason or whatever he can't avoid to think it was cool.

Or even better, with the context of Living Forever he may be a little worried as he's starting to suspect he may have a thing for trouble makers.

Not that Zara is one but she does have her moments like everyone. Another detail is her not really noticing she pushed a cop into the pool because I think she went rampage mode for a moment.

And with this the beach trip arc is finally over!

Or is it? I already have another comic cooking as we speak. I have something similar to a script. And originally it was going to be set right after this one. But it could also be set later back at home. It really works both ways. I'm still deciding.

But for this one I think I'm going to experiment with a more minimalist style. As it stands right now, the “script” includes 10 pages and it's not yet finished and the setting is a grocery store (a lot of stuff to draw there).

While working on this I saved a WIP that could work as an example of how that style could be.

But that's it, I'm not going to spoil more of it.

Lmao, good catch. On both lol. I guess by the time the band members noticed the bracelets thing, enough time had happened for them to think there would be no problem. Like, "guys, it's been hours and no one has noticed, I think we got this". As for the second observation, yeah it's them lol. They never really lost contact but this is a reunion some years later after college.

I know I keep coming back to this one, but there's a couple of new observations I made, this time after examining the first page more closely: One is that I just realized that while the old hotel bracelets the band has are colored yellow, it seems that any bracelets visible on the other pool-goers are blue...it's no wonder they were found out so easily, and makes this even more of a "what they hell were they thinking?!"-type of situation if they saw any of the new blue bracelets while going in and still thought this was a good idea. XP The second is even more exciting: On the upper right corner, the three characters in the loungers look awfully familiar...they're Tania and her two college roommates, aren't they? If so, it looks like they still stick together after all these years! And if it's not a coincidence that one of the kids playing in the pool in front of them is a polar bear, I'm also guessing those two kids belong to at least one of them and we find out even more about their lives after college! :D

Just remembered/realized something here: Tak literally saved Tony's life in the second to last page, and with RJ figuratively saving Zara's life twice - and then literally helping save Tony's life once, of course - when they first met, I'm starting to notice another pattern...just like how RJ is clearly Zara's heroic knight in shining armor, Tak is the same for Tony, and thus both of the band's big brown bears are the saviors and protectors of smol birbs! :D

I Love It! Best one i've seen so far.

Hehehe, naughty birb. Love the comic though, I can only imagine how long this must have taken but it was worth it! These comics give your characters so much personality and life!

Atlas

Ah yeah, I had forgotten about that one. Lol

Lol

Oh yeah, I can totally see her having flashbacks of that moment and thinking. That was a weird day.

The idea of Zara pushing a security guard into the pool and then being traumatised by it for weeks is oddly amusing. How about we just stick to pizza nights for now ey? XD

Atlas

That's one hell of a story to tell when passing the torch xd... "Let me tell ya kids the story of when your aunt Zara pushed a cop into a pool..." *How I Met Your Mother theme plays*

Mae: "Crimes?" Gregg: "Crimes!" :D In retrospect it was only a matter of time before the band found themselves running from the authorities for some reason or antother...Zara pushing a corrupt cop into a pool is as unexpected as it is satisfying, though part of me wishes we could've gotten a chance to see her bribing him instead. X3 And that unplanned Tony/Tak moment actually manages to be genuinely cute and funny, unlike certain other instances of that gag that just come off as forced and creepy *coughJossWhedondirectingJusticeLeagueandAgeofUltroncough* ;P
