Or 2 but I messed it up. See. So I had this idea for a piece from some time ago. I had this sense of doing something more intimate with my characters, but a different kind of intimate, so the idea was originally to make a collage of loose illustrations of the members of the band getting ready for their days. But I ended up completely over doing it.
So instead of a collage it ended up as 6 individual pieces each with like 4 alternative versions and some with more than that. Each more detailed than the one before, because apparently drawing bathrooms is really fun. Who knew?
So number two became number one because by the time I had done the last one the first one looked so simple and its composition so different from the others that I ended up remaking it almost from scratch, turning it into number 6. And making this and number 5 the most simple ones.
About this specific piece. This one is one of the first ones I came up with, so this one was easy.
So Davo's long ears hanging down to his shoulders are the closest thing anyone in the band has to long hair. That's the point of course, he's supposed to look like a metal head or something like that. So it is funny but it also makes sense for him to be the one who takes more time in the morning on his "beautiful hair" as you can see, and to the chagrin of his roommate Tony who often has to wait for a while to use the bathroom.
The idea is inspired by this comic by artist raeioul but also by some metal head friends of mine that have confirmed it. It is also inspired, as well as the rest of these, in Grease’s animated intro. As I too look like captain caveman before fixing my hair in the morning.
I wasn't able to decide with these things if I wanted them after taking a shower or after waking up so hence the alts. And there's two with pajamas because apparently I'm crazy.
I designed Tony and Davo's bathroom to look almost improvised as I imagine the building they live in to be one of those readapted ones. I think it used to be a factory or an office building before becoming apartments.
One of the things you may notice that survived from the original concept is the loose and crooked lines I used for the foregrounds.
