NITW Roadtrip

Morning and sunset versions.

I don't know why but in between commissions and my job I suddenly felt the urge to make a Night in the Woods fanart piece. It may have something to do with last week being the game's 6th anniversary and I guess it's been in my mind. I've actually been meaning to play it again lately. But who has the time?

This one has been on my mind for a bit. At the end of the game in the Bea route Mae talks to her about wanting to go on a road trip with her. And for some time I've been picturing what that would look like.

I actually had something a bit different in my mind for this piece. But doodling the other day I came up with this composition and I thought to myself, "let's do it.

I think this might be my first time drawing these characters in anything beyond the time that's shown in the game. And to help illustrate this I drew them with different outfits than the iconic ones they wear in the game.

For Mae I used the outfit she wears in this illustration by Scott Benson, one of the creators of the game. I wanted to draw her like that for a while. As for Bea I just made something up. Pretty similar to what she normally wears anyway but I wanted to play it safe. It’s slightly based, even if just “slightly”, on her outfit from the “Love in the woods” fan game, which is a game that if one day does come out I don’t think I’d be playing but damnit, I love the art for it.

I ended up making two versions, because I like to do that sometimes, especially to post different ones on each site. One in the morning and the other one at sunset. In the sunset one I use colors more similar to the ones of the game while the other one I use lighting that as far as I remember doesn’t appear in the game, so it’s more of my own thing.

The car in the piece is a VW Golf I GTI, and this I know well because I own one.

A toy one. If you look around my gallery you’ll notice that often when a car appears in a piece of mine is this model because I like to use the toy as a reference. It’s almost like an easter egg. Anyway, during the investigation for this piece I discovered that Bea’s car is supposed to be a Sedan. But by that point it was too late. So let’s say it’s just my head cannon.

NITW it’s a very influential piece of art to me. That’s hardly a mystery. Just as an example, if someone made a retrospective of my art, or something like that, they’d notice that the way I used colors and lighting was one before the game came out and another after. Often I would get a lot of comments on my stuff saying it has NITW vibes and I would smile reading that.
