There's nothing selfish with regards to wanting a life of peace and prosperity. Gaius wanted to turn you into a war fighting machine, and still is a piece of garbage. You fighting to get away from that and seek enlightenment by traveling the world isn't selfish. If anything, it's a healthy response to the terrible upbringing you had. I've seen people join the U.S Navy in particular because of reasons like those I described.
