Maybe the listener is an outcast for being gay in feudal times, so when the yearly sacrifice to their forest god happens, the listener is bound up and left for dead instead of an animal. However, the forest god, really just a druid, takes pity on the listener and takes him under his wing. They could develop a relationship over a shared love of nature.
