This was a fun watch! I can’t even count the number of times I’ve seen Airplane. I’m old, so I saw it in the theaters. So much of the humor holds up, but there were a ton of contemporary references that added so many jokes that it’s hard to breathe watching it! Much of the humor comes from who the actors are. The lady with the inner monologue was known for her coffee commercials who would say to herself “Jim never has a second cup of coffee at home.” And the “jive” translator played June Cleaver on Leave it to Beaver — just about the most clean-cut TV show ever. She was America’s perfect mother. And the guy sitting in the cab was a well-known very loud advocate for fiscal responsibility and reducing taxes. Another perfect running joke was many of the main characters. Leslie Nielsen (the doctor), Lloyd Bridges (the one who picked the wrong week to stop sniffing glue), Robert Stack (the pilot talking him down). These guys were veteran serious actors with lengthy careers. None of them had ever done comedy. You may have noticed that the director told them to all play it straight, as if it were a dramatic movie. Of course, Leslie Nielsen went on to play a ton of these ridiculous roles. Most people these days have never seen his more than 100 serious movies! Some movies referenced were The Godfather (1972), Midnight Express (1978), Jaws (1975), From Here to Eternity (1953), Saturday Night Fever (1977), The Wizard of Oz (1939), Shane (1953), Spartacus (1960), Airport (1975), and of course Zero Hour (1957) - the movie they lifted the plot and many lines from. Every one of these movies, except Airport and Zero Hour, are must see movies. I highly recommend them if you’ve never seen them. I think you’ve seen Wizard of Oz. Of the remainder, I’d start with Saturday Night Fever, Midnight Express and The Godfather.
