i am always amazed at acting in shows - often seems better than most movies i've seen... the golden age, like Dexter, Breaking Bad, Sopranos, I can't get over how those actors even do all that. like wow.

As someone who works in the film/TV industry, I know that acting classes are essential for actors of any level, especially out-of-work actors. I'm not a working actor myself (I'm behind the scenes), nor do I want to be. However, I'm in acting classes for other reasons. The people in my class range from full-time professional working actors to part-time actors with bit roles to aspiring actors. People believe that acting is just learning lines and then reciting them while pretending to feel something. I also thought this, even while working in the industry, up until I started taking classes. If you're not a full-time actor, there's not much space for you to practice acting. If you sit around and wait for your next role, then turn up to set after not acting for a few months, you may as well be an athlete turning up to the Olympics after not training for months. The full-time working actors in my class tend to be soap actors (like Joey) and play the same role every day in the same acting style that soaps require. They come to class to ensure their acting skills for other styles continue to be built on so that they are prepared for whatever comes next when they leave their roles. Penny spending money on acting classes when she's in significant financial hardship seems reckless, and it absolutely is IF she's not putting in the work to find roles. If she's actively seeking out auditions, agents, etc., I commend her for taking risks. I hugely admire people taking that career path as it is not easy, but I know many people who have found success in it because they stuck with it despite knowing it would be a challenge. It makes me wonder if the actors for Penny and Leonard had a discussion about this scene and about which character was right.

When I loan money I don’t plan on getting it back. I consider it a gift. Then I’m never disappointed. Bonus: I get to be pleasantly surprised if they do pay me back.
