Buffy the Vampire Slayer 5x16 FULL Reaction

Not to bring down the holiday/ new year vibe, but yeah... an admittedly incredible episode, killing off one of the best characters of the show, and definitely the most heart-wrenching episode of the show so far.

I've not got to this ep yet, but you watched this around Christmas?! That's as sad as me watching a finale of my favourite show (with a sad ending) a few days before Christmas! I'm just thinking I'm getting ever closer to this ep and not sure how much I can watch! (may need to watch the edited version)

This episode killed me when it first aired on TV. And it still gets me every time. My daughter watched all 7 seasons when she was about 13.... and slept in my bed for 3 nights after this episode. When my own mother passed away in 2019, this episode hit even harder, because I recognize the almost paralysis that the characters feel. And Buffy saying that she isn't even sure that she is there, so she can't answer when people ask how she is doing. Joss and SMG and the rest of the cast really captured the realities of how different people handle the first few hours of grief after a death. Any top ten list about "saddest deaths of a TV character" has this in the number 1 or 2 spot. SMG deserved an Emmy Award for this.

Buffy's "good luck" to the paramedics always kills me. Even in the midst of shock and her most painful moment, she finds time and energy to be compassionate.

This was such a great reaction, Nick! (I won't say I joined specifically to see this one early, but did I join to see this early?) The acceptance on your face when you said "It's just her body" at the end...it's so real. The lack of music, the departure from what we've known in previous episodes, the brutal realism...it hurts in a way few other episodes do. Absolutely one of the best and most difficult to watch episodes of television.

... "We're not drawing the object. We're drawing the negative space around the object." - Dawn's art teacher Anya is seen as the first representation for people with autism by many autistic fans ... not understanding quite emotions of people around, not getting on everybody's wavelength, but still feeling the same pain. ...Dawn's reaction to the news is what is going on inside of Buffy. This episode is harder to watch with every year passing. It was heartbreaking and beyond AMAZING the first time I saw it. The no music at all, the realism, the fact that anyone who has never watched the show at all can still watch this episode alone and appreciate it as much any fan of the show would, Tara and Willow having their very first kiss on camera... THIS is when fans first actually see them kiss... .... this episode gets way to real ...harder and harder to watch the older you get ...

I still cry no matter how many times I've seen this episode. Such a real depiction of death. And from this point on, tonally, both Buffy, and Angel as well, are never quite the same. Some fans loved it; some fans hated it. I personally think the remainder of Season 5 from this point on is a masterpiece of television.
