Kevin acts like a child at first, thinking his family magically disappeared but gradually learns to take care of himself as a grown up. Even becoming friends with the old neighbour is such a grown up scene, it's how adults become friends, not kids. The end shows he doesn't need his family, he's an adult, but he still wants them. But also, he would never have survived without his new friend. Also, the family at the beginning is stressed out, specifically the parents and they are not paying attention to Kevin's valid complaints. That is realistically what happens to many kids, but the movie tries to make it clear that it's because of the unusal stressful situation. Kevin is trying to explain what bothers him but his mother simply shuts him out. It makes sense because parents tend to do that when stressed. It also makes sense that Kevin wants his family to disappear because his concerns and struggles are being constantly disregarded.
