What happened in Guise Will Be Guise was that there was a real T'ish Magev, that was supposed to help Angel, but he was killed and replaced, thus preventing offering that guidance or enlightenment. The Valey who administer the test for the trials was legit and was on the neutral side of things, hence his very blasé demeanor and stance on everything. Also, the whole point of the trials and it ultimately building up a climax that ultimately doesn't occur is the point, it's anticlimax. The situation with saving Darla is basically the Superman being unable to save his father from a heart attack situation, something that is out of his control that no matter what he does, there's no winning by doing the right thing. In the end, it's Darla to actually die, but that choice is taken away by Lindsey (because as stated earlier in the episode, "he'll do whatever it takes to save her"); ie bring in Drusilla to turn her. A lot of people are making choices for what Darla should do, but at the end of the day, it's her choice about what she does with her life
