Mark knew about the anniversary because Rachel probably talked about her plans at work. Rachel's mistake ,still, was letting Mark come over,late at night, when she was alone, when chances were that Ross might come back or call. nothing but complications could be expected. but it's also consistent. Rachel has a hard time saying "No" to people. she also never asks a guy out, she always expects the guy to understand her signals, like with Joshua, Danny in season 5, even Ross in season 1.. Mark said he was GONNA LEAVE A MESSAGE. that is why he called - he assumed Rachel is out with Ross and Mark was about to leave a message on the answering machine about work. However, hearing Rachel, he used the situation to come over. He is definitely interested in Rachel, but as we later see, she was never into him and she only goes out with him because she's not sure what she feels, as she discussed with Phoebe. then she realizes she's not interested and doesn't even kiss Mark. Ross's mistake was give in to his pain and have the one night stand, though he was technically free to do it. the thing is, everyone,including Rachel,has a right to sleep with someone after being told by their partner that they're taking a break.....especially after then overhearing that late at night they have a colleague in the appartment...the colleague who always seemed to be interested. would i sleep with someone right after that - NO, i wouldn't, but i can't blame either Ross or anyone else in his place. Would I forgive Ross? probably not, i would probably,like Rachel,need a big apology and full responsibility for that night... because it would hurt so much.....
