Just one corrective point I'd like to make, since Thor has seen far enough that it won't be a spoiler. I don't think Riley "bailed" instead of letting Buffy help him. The next time we see him, he shows up in front of Adam. I think that's when Adam activated the chip and summoned him. I don't think he had a choice. We were just supposed to think, as Buffy did, that he left because he was upset about Forrest.

2023-05-19 00:05:02 +0000 UTCWhile I have more empathy for Riley than the average fan (I grew up in a military family, so I get the way you can be indoctrinated), I love how this episode depicts Buffy's bond with Angel as being so much deeper. The scene where Buffy and Riley talk early in the episode is so awkward and neither of them is reading what the other one actually means. And then later, Riley kinda makes excuses for being insecure by saying it's because he loves her (honest, yes, but never a justifiable reason for poor behavior toward a partner), only to bail instead of letting her help him while he's upset. Meanwhile, Buffy and Angel can communicate a complex idea with just a tilt of the eyebrow. Or there's the part where Angel says "I don't like him," as a way of saying "I care enough about you that I'm still invested in whether someone's good enough for you." And she reads what he actually means so clearly and thanks him. They might not know each other's worlds anymore, but they still know each other so well. As a Bangel fan, this episode just warms my heart after the upheaval of the previous Angel ep.
