The Abyss FULL Reaction

To me, this is James Cameron's Interstellar.  And I like the water and mystery and intrigue, but it's the main characters relationship that is easily the highlight of the film for me

This is one of my favorite childhood movies. I'm especially glad you watched this version, as I prefer the theatrical version of this movie--the special edition feels really preachy to me and all the additional stuff slows the pace too much. I do usually recommend that people see both, just with the special edition second. You can always add more scenes later to enrich a story, but once you've seen too much, you can never really experience the more streamlined version on its own terms. Imo, Cameron's a guy who does his best with a good editor, as he tends to leave in scenes that spoil tension, change characters in pretty severe ways, or get very preachy. But it's a fun debate regardless of your preferences :D I also noticed the weird transitions between scenes that you mentioned, but that's not related to either edition--it seems like the version of the film you watched may have been edited for television or for time? I've seen the theatrical enough times that I have huge chunks memorized, and your version seemed choppy compared to my memory.

I completely agree that the characters and their relationships are what really carries this movie and makes it stand out! ❤️ Can't wait to see your reaction. (Have to wait though, as I am attending family festivitas atm)😊😊😊

Yeah I tried to rent the extended edition but unfortunately it wasn't available in my area... I did however look up a few deleted scenes especially at the end of the film, and you're right, it really is a big difference in the whole final act and even message of the movie

Just added the movie so you can watch along :)

Yes! Super happy about this one. Yup you are correct Lt. Coffey is played by Michael Biehn who also played Hicks in Aliens and Kyle Reese in The Terminator. The extended cut is definitely the better version as the cut scenes do help fill in those gaps. The ending is also much more impactful.

I tried to watch, but as it's the blurred version, I need to sync up. I can't find The Abyss to stream on Netflix, HBO, or even Amazon Prime. Anybody have any idea where to legally stream? I don't want to pay for yet another streaming service, but it is what it is. Can't watch my old DVD version without a DVD player anymore, LOL. I could try with YouTube, but I have strong apprehension about it going smoothly for syncing. :p
