The Pianist FULL Reaction

Another tragic (yet excellent) movie.  I didn't realize this was based on a real story when I started watching...

Such a good movie!! I HIGHLY suggest you watch Green Book (2018 movie), if you haven’t yet. I think you’ll really love it!

I have seen Valkyrie a few times and I love it - would definitely recommend :)

Phew, you got some heavy hitters out this/last week, Thor. Great reaction as usual. Love your thoughtful comments. This movie is so heartbreaking. The "contrast" between the beautiful music and the horrors... (and then it's not even a contrast because the music is so heartbreaking as well - Chopin all day, esp. the nocturnes.). I know what you mean, that art, esp. music, transcends all sorts of barriers and just speaks to our common humanity. I like to think though that Hosenfeld was a decent man and that it was not just a shared love for music that made him help Szpilman/Spielman (btw, "spielen" in German means "to play", thats why he said Szpilman/Spielman is a fitting name for a pianist). I like to think Hosenfeld would have done the same for a plumber or an accountant. There were people with more than a shred of humanity even in high-ranking positions, e.g. Stauffenberg. Btw, there's a movie on Stauffenberg by Bryan Singer, starring Tom Cruise, called Valkyrie . I'ver never seen it, maybe someone else can say whether it'd be worth watching. Other than that, if you want to experience some different perspectives on the topic, I recommend Sophie Scholl - The Final Days about a member of the non-violent student resistance group the White Rose. Although I don't know whether it'd be a good fit for the channel, it's a slower movie. But it was nominated for Best Foreign Film (Academy Awards 2006). Sophie Scholl has been one of my personal heroes since I read about her as a teenager. Then there's also Das Boot ('the boat'), a war film directed by Wolfgang Petersen, which was nominated for 6 Academy Awards. It's based on a book, I recommend the director's cut. If you have at least 3.5hrs to spare, you will not regret it! PS: thought I'd better point out that I am not trying to make excuses for any of the horrific things the nazis did and that the high-ranking officers undeniably were aware of/part of/signed off on, but obviously humans are complex and cognitive dissonance is a thing.
