Buffy 2x20 "Go Fish" FULL Reaction

So... Cordelia would date Xander even as a fish?  That's pretty awesome.  More Snyder?  Even more awesome :)

Buffy 2x20 "Go Fish" FULL Reaction

Comments

But it was "lampshaded", Mr Thor. They mentioned that they were going home. It's all fine.

People have griped that episode "breaks the momentum" of the main story, but IMO it's understandable that Joss Whedon wanted to handle the finale himself (writing and directing both parts) and a 3-parter would just over-tax him. His #2 man, David Greenwalt, was busy handling the production end, and it didn't make much sense to just be running in place on that story. So Joss inserted a perfectly good standalone. I have no complaints. Where is Oz? We never find out. Seth Green is off making a movie ("Idle Hands") but for all we know, Oz is just going to class and studying for finals, and Willow keeps forgetting to mention him, that's all. And the coach wasn't eaten. Remember, the fishmen had already had "dinner" (the nurse)…"but boys have other needs…" So it was Death-by-Impalement, as it were. (Kind of twisted that Buffy and Xander apparently watched the interspecies gang-rape going down, actually.)

Jessica Roth

This episode was ok but I think the episodes in between are showing how much of a key point the gang is too buffy to lead into the finale. I can't wait for your reaction because the season 2 finale is one of my all-time favorite episodes.

I don’t know if it’s cause I have zero recollection of this episode, but I had a blast! Xander, the fish puns, Willow’s interrogation scene, Cordy…I could go on. Definitely not the worst of the season (*coughs* Bad Eggs). I’m fine with monster of the week as long as the eps have some depth or good one liners and this one was pretty funny at times. Cam - yes he was a dog. What he attempted with Buffy was definitely not ok…but wishing he got attacked “Psycho” style in the shower…Uhmm…😬😅 Cordelia - First of all…Cordy not being a supportive girlfriend (in the traditional sense) is totally on brand for her. The way she spoke to Xander is no different than how she’s treated him before. However, she has always shown glimmers of kindness so I’m glad they continued with that development during the pool scene. As blunt as Cordy can be, I really do think she cares for Xander…and you know…I’ve never had a favourite character from this show but Cordy might very well change that. I’ve been hesitating with Cordy cause while I do admire her honesty, her comedy and impeccable style, I generally need more heart from a character. Now since I’ve skipped some eps with other reactors, I missed out on a lot of the depth and vulnerability they gave Cordy this season. I’m glad she’s more than just the comic relief. She’s such a big softie under that tough exterior and I love that! Culpability - I relate to your struggle with seeing it from the boys’ perspective because Cam’s actions were not ok as you said but at the same time Cam and the other guys were not technically adults yet either. In the case of the boys trusting the coach and Cam’s assault on Buffy, I personally see that as a reflection of their home life/ parents. Kids don’t tend to gravitate towards surrogate parental figures such as a coach if they have a solid foundation at home, and guys like Cam usually come from homes of abuse, neglect or just general dysfunction as well. I’m not saying these guys have no accountability but I don’t think it’s a black and white situation either. As for the coach, even in his case I’m willing to see his side. But to be honest, I found this whole episode a bit silly at times because the coach felt like a caricature villain. He was so dramatic but his actions didn’t match his goal. “You’re a high school coach bro!” summed it up perfectly 😂 - Putting that aside, I do think that on some level his obsession made sense. You mentioned episodes like “Lie to Me” where characters also made desperate decisions. I see your point about that episode and with scenarios where people act irrationally to save a loved one, but what if that’s how the coach saw his situation? Maybe for him not reaching his peak as a coach was like death for him? What if he was a loner, or felt like a loser all his life and being a coach was all he had? I’m not excusing his insanity but there’s always a story behind people’s actions even if it’s just for the money (as someone suggested already). Anyway, I’m counting down the days for the next one! Whenever you mentioned Angelus it hurt so much. It’s so, so hard being “considerate” hahaha :)

Effie

Actually I understand why Buffy wouldn’t go after the creatures that the swim team turned into. They only attacked the people that the coach threw at them and then the coach himself. They looked monstrous but they weren’t monsters. The coach was the real monster.

Vicky N

Stuff I love: the "after the fall of the Soviet Union" moment Stuff I hate: the Scoobies being dismissive about the swimmer guy's attempted sexual assault of Buffy in the car.

Briony Addey

Admittedly I was going to skip this reaction but seeing that Thor found a couple of good things to say about it I now feel I have to watch it 🤷‍♀️😂

CeNedra

I thought it might be something like that, thank you for clearing that up :)

Eileen Furtado

Hey Eileen :) Ep 21 isn't available yet. That's parts an intro for YouTube to let people know patreon has ep 1 week ahead. When this video hits YouTube next weeks ep 21 will be available. Ep 20 is the current early access ep.

Adri

Hey Thor I had a question, you mentioned in this reaction video that episode 21 is available for early access, and I am an early access patron and I do not see it here, am I missing something? Would be great if you could clear that up for me

Eileen Furtado

You ask why would they dose kids? Why risk the scandal of grade fixing? Easy. Money. The school gets paid off admission to meets, the concession stand and all that school spirit merch the fans buy. Then, if they win state, another payday. So, it all boils down to cold, hard cash. And explains why the athletes are allowed to behave as they do. They're the school's "golden ticket ", the geese that keep laying golden eggs. So, if they bully their classmates or assault a few girls they get away with it because the money has to keep rolling in.

Nica Marie

or maybe I'm thinking of it aired as a rerun its been so long. Either way it'd still be nice if he was able to watch them together.

Adri

This episode stinks...in more ways than one lol

Blain H Granado

Interesting. I saw it live as well. Maybe you live in a different country than me. The 2 part ep always aired the same night.

Adri

Um no it didn't. Becoming Parts 1 & 2 aired a week apart. I know. I was there

Jeffrey Vasquez

You mentioned Mummy Girl and Lie to Me where characters make poor moral choices out of desperation, But there is also Prophesy Girl where Buffy makes a hard moral choice to help others despite her desperation and knowledge that it may be at the cost of her life.

Bud Haven

I think that ending it was just a scary gag like other "monster of the week" ones. The she-mantis has eggs in the classroom, the witch is still trapped on a statue, the invisible girl was recluted by the goberment... They used to do that in horror shows (like in The X Files).

sefirotsgame .

My god, we have finally made it to the last 2 episodes. I’m so excited for you to watch them

Jamie

The position of this episode in the season is a bit odd but for 'monster' episodes I actually think it's fine and it just suffers by comparison to the episodes around it. It's quite funny. The themes of teen sexual assault and high school athletic academic hypocrisies are sadly still relevant.

Dutchkel

I hope you watch the last two episodes together. The 2 part episodes aired the same night. Its meant to be watched in one go...

Adri

Not watched this yet judging by the comments seems like it must be a easily forgettable episode as I cant even remember it and I have watched this show many times im sure it will come to me when I watch it.

Linda Wightman

Definitely an episode that felt more like a season one episode. It has good character moments, but otherwise I usually skip on rewatches. Like everyone else, looking forward to the next 2 episodes.

JenM

I mean, I was fairly anxious to get back to the Angelus storyline, but I still had fun and I liked the themes in this one. And I've heard of Prison Break but I'm not familiar with that one, I'll have to look it up!

Nicholas Crowell

Not really a fan of this episode. But you really seemed to enjoy it, so I´m glad for you. :) By the way, you do not know the show "Prison break", do you? Because one of the swimteam guys is one of the two main characters of that show, and you didn´t mention it, as other reactors sometimes do. Just wanted to tell you, if maybe you just somehow missed it :) Thanks for uploading. I´m always looking forward for your reactions :)

Nicologik Reacts

Yeah that was a highlight moment for me too!

Nicholas Crowell

I hope you get there soon...and for the love of all that's good and holy, please be careful of the comments. Yes, I have little to no faith in this fandom 😭 haha. I can't wait for next week! :)

Effie

OOF. I never rewatch this one, and it's at the bottom of the barrel for me. But Cordelia talking herself into making it work with not-fish-Xander is definitely a highlight!

Joelle Schutt

I haven't yet unfortunately! I just watched this one last night and it was too late to keep going, but I am so excited (and maybe a bit nervous) to see how things wrap up this season... hopefully I'll know soon!

Nicholas Crowell

Dang, I won't have time to watch this until tomorrow (and I don't remember this ep at all)...but wow we are so close to the end! So I wonder if this means you've completed S2 now? (I personally hope you have, just so I can feel assured that you made it unspoiled! haha). I also can't wait to let out my unfiltered thoughts. Even with your predictions now it's so hard not to say anything. But I'm so glad you've enjoyed this season. It will forever be my favourite :)
