Buffy the Vampire Slayer 2x18 FULL Reaction

Any thoughts on that creature? Am I overthinking things? (yes, I know I am...)

Buffy the Vampire Slayer 2x18 FULL Reaction

watching this i know you'll absolutely love the season 4 finale. it puts me on edge knowing its not up yet even though i have 2 seasons before i'm even caught up! i love watching people react to a show i love its a way to watch the show again with a whole new added layer:) definitely good for me because i watched this show for the first time in middle school and rediscovered my love for it in early august, finished my first watch through in late august, and by october 15th i'd watched it 5 more times. that show was the literal background soundtrack of my life. i'd go to sleep at night watching it, dream about it, wake up and think about it, then put it back on. when not watching i genuinely would miss them, and in those raw moments of just waking up or on the verge of sleep i'd be confused as to why they weren't there, and think "i want to go home" when i really meant i wanted to watch the show. a bit much admittedly but i genuinely love this show more than some people in my life. anyways. took a break and watched some other stuff and now i'm here watching this lol i couldn't stay away

I'm not! When I talk about quitting I'm just caught up in the emotion of the moment/ joking (sorry if that doesn't always come across clearly). If I do decide to quit a show, I'll make an official announcement :)

I hope you don’t call it quits! You’re one of my favorite Buffy reactors!

Hmm it’s funny how things can be so scary to you as a kid but not as an adult haha. I’ve never really thought about what the monster could represent. Some people have already mentioned that it’s a child’s imagining of “death” and the fear of being unable to prevent it. I think that’s about right. I appreciate that this episode tried to deal with the aftermath of Jenny’s death in a more metaphorical way but I do agree that I would have preferred having an episode focused on Giles. The highlight for me was definitely Cordelia. I don’t have a favourite character from this show but I’m convinced that I’d probably be close friends with Cordy in real life 😅. Her whole speech about tact and blunt honesty is basically my philosophy too. With that approach at least what you see is what you get. And as for Xander….the heart wants what it wants, so I never buy into seeing the great person in front of you. If it’s love then Xander wouldn’t have to try. In which case I agree, it’s not fair to string Cordy along. Weirdly, I do think he cares for her but Xander has deep insecurities that I suspect is driving his infatuation for Buffy. It’s kind of frustrating because I actually love the Xander/ Cordy dynamic. They have amazing banter and they’re so much fun to watch :)

One small note: although they only used the one set, it's unlikely that Celia died at Sunnydale General. Joyce says Celia died in A hospital, not "THIS hospital". And you can argue that expecting Joyce to know where she is may be asking too much, but I'll give her the benefit of the doubt…this time. Besides, Buffy didn't have any trouble visiting the hospital to check on the injured Laura in "Nightmares". I think it's being a patient, being helpless, that freaks Buffy out, not the building specifically. And it was pretty heavily implied in the pilot that Buffy had never been to Sunnydale before.. (She needs Cordelia to tell her about the town and all she can tell Giles about it is that it's "two hours on the freeway from Nieman-Marcus." I'd guess that the Kindestod travels from town to town, killing a few kids and then moving on. I mean, even in Sunnydale, if he was killing kids for a *decade*, someone might have noticed. Best to lie low and keep moving, like any good serial killer would. How did a guy with a German name end up in SoCal, after all?

On a completely-different (and much lighter) note, not only does director Deran Serafian do.a fine job overall, IMO, but after all that "watching Buffy's back" sniping between Xander and Cordelia, Serafian gives us a shot of Buffy leaning on Xander as they leave the basement that, er, makes Buffy's "back" look very watchable, indeed. It might not be the fan-service that the slow pan across Buffy's chest in "Bad Eggs" was, but as a completely-shallow person, I appreciate it, anyhow. :) And LMAO at your imagining the "reveal" of W/X in Buffy's bedroom at the end continuing on to reveal the whole cast in there! Now I can imagine Spike in the hallway or similar (has to avoid the sunlight, after all) calling after Joyce: "And bring me some more beer! You hit me with that axe that time, you bloody OWE me! Come on, now!" A hostess's work is never done, lol. (However, I think Joyce rather deserves it…I mean, how does she not know that Buffy wants CRUNCHY peanut butter? Creamy vs. Crunchy is one of the fundamental divides of the universe! Ethan Rayne even told us that! Seventeen years of raising Buffy, and she doesn't even know what peanut butter her own daughter likes? Seriously, Joyce, get with the program! [/kidding…mostly])

I was thinking about that, too. How even though this started as an inventory script left over from Season 1 and the credited writers had been let go (so they could find new jobs in pilot season), the reworking that Joss Whedon gave it not only really serves the supporting cast (as Thor noted), but subtly deals with what Buffy's going through right now. We hear Joyce say that Buffy "never" gets sick, which means that her getting the flu even though none of the people she's around did probably indicates that she's been out patrolling all night for a number of nights, and thus her immune system is shutting down. So even though Buffy doesn't have a chunk of lines about how guilty she feels about Calendar, it's implied. And while you can say the back story about Celia is a manipulative plot device and a convenient coincidence (does Buffy need a PERSONAL connection to fight evil? Not that we've seen), it's so wonderful to see her as "Power Girl" and realize that Buffy always wanted to be a superhero, that even with all the stress and the heartbreak (and the time she died…), that this is what she always knew she wanted to be. Indeed, Buffy has no problem calling herself "a hero" when she's talking to Ryan, which some people might find awkward to do. And then, of course, Ryan tells her that "you can't fight death". Which is exactly what Buffy's been struggling with ever since Angel turned. From letting Angel get away at the mall ("You must be so disappointed in me") to her guilt over Theresa ("I live with that every day") and then Jenny, she must be feeling so inadequate. But she keeps fighting, even risking her life with the virus just to be able to fight in the first place. And when she's about to be overwhelmed, she turns the tables with the neck-snap, as if taking the lesson from Angel and putting it to use herself. This is such a great episode for Willow and Xander and Cordelia (and Anthony Stewart Head does a painfully good job at showing Giles's grief) that it's easy to miss what it tells us about Buffy. But it's a good ep for her, too.

I feel that the creature being thought of by the kids as being "death" really got Buffy in the feels because Miss Calendar just died, and she knows she can't fight death. But since it was a monster, it gave her the energy to fight and release some of her anger/sadness. That's how I took the deeper theme. Great reaction!

ShinShi

Not really of course :)

Nicholas Crowell

Calling it quits?!?! Lol no!

bing.E

For the question if Jenny would come back as a vampire? The answer is no, Angel snapped her neck and did not feed off her or do anything that would make her become a vampire. :)

Eileen Furtado

ha same. Looking for some busy work I can do and watch at the same time but I really have some projects I should be working on lol

Dutchkel

Since I know you've seen A Nightmare On Elm Street did the scene where the Doc is dragged away remind you of anything? Gotta love the homage to a classic 80s horror movie.

Nica Marie

Wow early again, yay! :) Although I'm not as psyched because if I remember correctly, this ep traumatised me a bit as a kid. I remember it being much darker and creepier than normal? But since you like horror, I think you probably enjoyed this one haha

Effie

Me: Hmmm, I have a ton of work projects that I'm already behind on and really can't afford to take a break at the moment. Also me: Oh! Thor posted a new Buffy reaction! Well, today is the 25th anniversary of the Buffy pilot so I suppose I need to watch the episode to show my support to such a life changing show!
