Buffy the Vampire Slayer Ep 2x9 FULL Reaction

Two Vampire Slayers?  Two?? Two???

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Ep 2x9 FULL Reaction

Comments

Fun fact: that wasn't a stunt double, that was actually Sarah doing the skating :D and to add to my comment (from apparently a year ago, lol) yes, there is a name for Frog Phobia because I have it, lol. Ranidaphobia is the official name. If you Google it, it's a little bizarre, but I don't quite have it to that point... they just freak me out for some reason. I think it's the hopping o.O

fatalfae

Thor: Wow, she's got some kicks, just like Buffy's style. Kendra: I'm Kendra. The vampire slayer. :D Haha, it was like you got it just before you got it.

oh, and, personally, I liked the "gunbelt theory". In German, we have the expression 08/15 (pronounced Nullachtfünfzehn or Nullachtfuffzehn 'nill eight fifteen') which goes back to WW1 where 08/15 was the number of the standard issue machine gun. We now use 08/15 to describe something that is common/nothing out of the ordinary, in fact, smth a little boring/unexciting (it def has a negative connotation), e.g. "The food at the new restaurant was 0815". Obvs this is a lot more specific, and thus traceable, than "9 yards", but you can see how the use of the expression came about.

"the whole nine yards": I found a couple of explanations, but it's been referred to as "the most prominent etymological riddle of our time" (Yale librarian Fred Shapiro, 2010). The first recorded non-idiomatic use goes back to 1907. Because 27ft/9 (and also 6 yrds) are such standard measurements for a number of things (e.g. gun belts during WW1 and 2, length of pieces of fabric, cubic measurement of concrete mixers, etc.) people seem to have used the expression "throughout" meaning "the whole thing/all the way". Ergo, no consensus on the exact origin. Consensus on that the expression originated in the States in terms of being popularized after the 60s. It seems that the main researcher on this topic was a NYT language columnist (W. Safire) who passed away in 2009. Since text corpora (such as COCA - the Corpus of Contemporary American English, or BNC - the British National Corpus) have been improved and are more widely available than 10 or 20yrs ago –I would assume that includes text scans of historical texts/specialized historical corpora– maybe it'd be possible now to find instances that date back even further than 1907 and shed light on the expression's origin. (I did quick COCA, BNC, and Google n-grams queries and found nothing). Anyway, interesting!

Interesting, I never paid that much attention to the tarot deck, but now the one-eyed devil is so obvious with the first "one-eyed" Taraka attacker and the worm/centipede thing on the second card. Maybe they custom made the deck/those specific cards for the show/this episode.

Darn, have to keep down spending, but now I'll have to upgrade to watch the 2nd part! And that right after feeling so judged for not making my bed 95% of the time :') (Frankly, I think it's worse that Buffy doesn't take her shoes off lying down)

The late 90s were a bit late for this, but those traveling salesmen were a thing for ages, going around trying to sell encyclopedias or vacuum cleaners or Bibles. And it probably always was dangerous. (In the Stephen King story "The Dead Zone," the bad guy first appears as a traveling salesman, who kicks a dog to death when it dares to bark at him.)

Thanks! Love this two parter. I wonder where Dru got her tarot deck because 6:54 is the 10 of Swords without the swords and 29:23 is the Devil but one-eyed, hmm.

Thanks so much. Drusilla was attacked by an angry mob in Prague. It's been mentioned by Giles but he didn't go into too much detail, so it can be easily missed or forgotten. I didn't notice for a while, and I've seen this series multiple times. Anyway, great reaction. Love it as always :D

Grace

I live for the whaaaa?! at the end of this episode. Tickles me every time. Drusilla is reading Tarot cards but I admit I don't normally notice she does tap an angel looking card. Also, Xander does set up Cordelia up for her responses quite often and visa versa. Great observation.

Dutchkel

No need to pressure. Editing is a thing.

I CANNOT WAIT for the next episode!!! Gotta say it again, I adore how you catch every detail. Great analysis as always.

This was AMAZING! One of my favourites of the season although the second part is my fav of the two. I’m so glad you watched 9&10 back to back. I’m usually all for double Buffy eps but since you’ve been poorly I don’t mind if part 2 is next week, just so you can give yourself time to rest and catch up on filming. As for this Ep, I love it because we get more of an arc with Drusilla and a set up to a bigger story. I love Kendra so much and the show down with Buffy was so thrilling to rewatch. I also loved that amidst the threat we still got those intimate moments such as with Angel and Buffy. I just love the vulnerability between them…it’s so sweet but at the same time we see their insecurities (Angel’s inner demon and Buffy and her feeling trapped and resenting her duty). Really enjoyed this reaction…I cannot wait for part 2 :)

Effie

Ah so if you watched both episodes back to back that means the next one will be up tomorrow, right? RIGHT? 😁

Tim Pierce

There was a mob in Prague that nearly killed Drusilla. I think that's as much as we've been given to this point.

Tim Pierce

he said he was gonna watch it straight away, but didn't say he was gonna post it right away

Great reaction, had so much fun, thank you :)

Nicologik

The link is working for me but 2x10 isn’t up yet?

Jamie

It's working now at least!
