2021-12-17 23:52:05 +0000 UTCI really like how the stand alone episodes always have something to offer for the characters. This one is Buffy trying to act her own age. Be a girl with a normal life, avoiding the pressure of parental figures, going to a party and talking to a boy to forget about the one she really wants. I think we can all relate to that on some level from our teenage years. Minus the supernatural part. 😂 Buffy & Angel are one of my favourite love stories because of their tragic circumstances. He’s immortal, she isn’t. He’s experienced life but she hasn’t had a chance yet. But they are also probably the only two who could ever understand each other too. They both live in the darkness. Both have powers of their own they don’t quite understand. Both have are loners in their own world. Both carry the weight of their responsibilities. Buffy as the slayer & Angel with his soul. Their chemistry is electric 🔥

2021-12-17 21:18:08 +0000 UTCJust to echo the comments here…this is one I tend to skip with other reactors too haha. I don’t hate it, it just doesn’t advance the bigger story. I know you’re keen to get into that too and this season does delve into arcs more than S1, but since it’s like 22 episodes, there will be a few ‘monster of the week’ eps here and there. I’m glad that you seem to enjoy this one though! Cordy was the highlight for me. Her fake laugh and laughing at everything that guy said had me rolling 😂 Also good on you for picking up on the bigger theme of peer pressure and herd mentality. Cliques exist everywhere in our society, not just high school and I think this happens because as humans we’re built for attachment, relationships and connection. Being part of a group is a form of acceptance and it gives us an illusion of identity. For teens they are much more vulnerable to coercion if they have a poor foundation at home. In my experience, the ones getting into this kind of trouble were those who were disconnected from their parents and therefore sought that “family” connection with their peers. In Buffy’s case, we know she has abandonment issues with her dad and even though she has a great mother, she constantly feels pressure from her because she doesn’t know about the Slayer thing and so that leads to isolation and detachment. Despite that, Buffy is usually mature so I think her bad judgement just came from her feeling low about all the Slayer pressure and Angel. Also, I’d have to disagree about pushing young people in general. I’m of the mindset that children are incredibly intuitive and if you gently prod them and let them figure things out their own way they will get there (just maybe not in the way we want). Pushing never works in my opinion. It may look like laziness on the surface but lack of motivation is usually a sign of disconnect (usually triggered by not living the life you want). Buffy may act cool but we have constantly seen how she carries a lot of resentment being a Slayer because this calling was not something she chose wilfully. And as for school….you see her mother constantly push her about that too but Buffy never seems interested and not just because she’s busy saving the world. I genuinely think school is not for her but she has no say in that either. So I really empathise with why she often feels so lost and alone. Final point about Buffy and Angel. I’m so glad you feel the intensity between them. I personally adore their chemistry. There’s something so sad yet beautiful about them. Anyway, I’m resisting the urge to say anything else haha. I really look forward to hearing your thoughts on how that plays out. Sorry this one got kinda long! :)

2021-12-17 17:14:42 +0000 UTCIt's a difficult situation. Yes Buffy and Angel have feelings for each other. But he is a vampire and will never age. She is a teen girl and he's right, she still has a lot of maturing to do, though she is very mature for her age because she was forced to grow up very fast. It seems the odds are against them, but as an audience member, I so want them together and hope they defy the odds. I also love how you can quickly get the themes of the episodes, that they aren't just about a weird snake, that it is about the dangers of being out of balance and the horrors of growing up.
