Umbrella Academy Episode 10 FULL Reaction (finale)

Wow.  Well, they tried their best... Now I have no idea what to expect for Season 2.

Umbrella Academy Episode 10 FULL Reaction (finale)

Comments

Vanya was on mood suppressors since age of 4. She literally never learned how to fully feel & manage her emotions, she had developed no coping mechanism other than taking her pills. Vanya discovering that her view of herself throughout her entire life had been shaped by Allison's rumor was traumatic. Her sister, who at best had ignored her for decades, was suddenly to be trusted when she said she didn't know what she'd done to Vanya? Vanya was suffering withdrawal from the pills; mood swings, panic attacks, paranoia, and she had just discovered her powers. Into that mix, Allison was confessing that she knew about Vanya's powers...and had somehow forgotten rumoring her? Sure, as viewers we see it in the context that Allison was a child, but Vanya didn't. She overreacted, she wasn't being rational, she felt betrayed and so very, very angry. Remember, she told Allison twice to leave. It was only when Allison was going to rumor her again that Vanya instinctively struck out in self-defense. Immediately after, Vanya was horrified at what she'd done, so panicked she didn't know what to do. Then Leonard literally drags her away. Watch the scene again and you'll see that he grabs her and shoves her out the door. By the time the show picks up at Leonard's house, Vanya has disassociated. The tub scene highlights that. Then we see Vanya learn that Leonard was using her, lying to her about everything. Again, she tried to warn someone to stop, to not push her into reacting. (It's interesting why Leonard thought his triggering Vanya was a good plan. I assume he believed she'd collapse, begging him to forgive her for doubting his love & that she'd do whatever he wanted. He failed to understand that she really did love her siblings, that her attachment to him was still too new, and that her suppressed rage would see him as a threat & target) Eventually we see a heartbroken, guilt-ridden Vanya go back to the academy to check on Allison, explain what happened, and seek forgiveness. Then comes Luther's betrayal, a hug that was merely a trap and then locking her away where memories would flood back, triggering her further. Then everyone walked away, leaving Vanya trapped, just as she'd been as a child. Not too surprising she then had a psychotic break, disassociating again. People seem so outraged that Vanya killed Pogo, but would they have been outraged if it had been Papa Hargreeves she had killed? Think about it, Pogo enabled her father's emotional, mental & physical (pills) abuse, not only of Vanya, but of all the siblings. Maybe he was impotent while Hargreeves was alive, but later HE chose to keep the secrets until they were forced out. Vanya grew up believing that Pogo cared for her, yet his actions demonstrated otherwise. So, Pogo's betrayal appeared to prove to Vanya that Leonard had been right all along...that everyone feared her, sought to keep her down, hid the truth from her and never really loved her at all. Watch the scene again and the pain of betrayal on Vanya's face as she internalizes Pogo's confession--it's heartbreaking. Elliot Page really hit that moment. The final shove for Vanya was at her concert. She thought Allison had come to hear her play, and they exchanged a moment. But then it was broken by her brothers' attack & Vanya's belief that her sister was a part of their attempt to again crush her chance to be extraordinary. Vanya's disassociative state is complete when she's slowing draining the power/life from her brothers. And I'd like to point out that if the moon hadn't been in the way, Vanya's beam of power would have gone off harmlessly into space...she caused the apocalypse by accident/bad luck. Do I believe that Vanya bears a degree of responsibility for her actions? Absolutely! But the show does such a great job of laying out a character so damaged by her upbringing that the resulting actions of others pushes her into a mental breakdown. She's so badly broken that the girl who cried over ants was lost within the maelstrom of her pain, rage & powers. There were so many moments where a different choice by her or the others could've short-circuited the outcome...but that's not what happened.

Yeah I've always believed it would've happened anyway. That power was still building inside her and I feel like what Five said earlier in the episode is a good description, that Vanya is the bomb. I know he didn't mean that literally, but that's how it felt watching the ending. I feel like her power is creating a bomb, of sorts, inside her. As she plays her power keeps building and building making the 'bomb' stronger. I honestly feel like there was nothing they could do at that point to stop it from happening, even shooting her.

They revealed that Five sent the "kill each other" telegrams in The Day That Was I'm not convinced shooting Vanya would've dispersed the power safely. It might've still shot out of her and taken the moon even if she was dead.
