Still to this day, after having seen the original series, I'm still conflicting on how intentional some of the writing for the characters is. Cause you nailed it with Deb having signs of BPD, but also, it seems like the writers leaned HEAVY on the BPD stereotypes we often see in fiction when it comes to Lila. Lila is that wild, unpredictable, destructive, manipulative, narcissist. She's the typical 'crazy ex' every writer comes up with, and people assign those characters with BPD because that's how less knowledgeable people imagine it. It's always been portrayed as the 'crazy chick' diagnoses in media so most people don't actually know anything about it beyond that. It's like that with lots of mental stuff. But with the show Dexter, it's possible that Deb's character was intentionally written with those kind of mental challenges. I never read the original source material for Dexter, and I don't think I ever will cause I don't read that kind of fiction. But I heard the books and the show are extremely different. And if the writers of the show understood the nuances and the wide spectrum of APD when it came to writing Dexter, then it's possible they really did a deep dive on personality disorders in general and that's how Deb ended up written the way she was. From my small amount of knowledge about BPD (Only one person in my life has been diagnosed with it that I know of) it fits Deb way more accurately then it fits Lila.

2025-12-19 08:14:49 +0000 UTCVery true about deb.. I got diagnosed with BPD in my twenties. After talking therapy and getting older it seems to be pretty mild now. But the way deb is, i definitely used to act like that, going through my gf's phones, convinced they were cheating or didn't appreciate me enough, was mostly alcohol fueled but rarely drink now :) Great reaction anyway. Really enjoying the dexter uploads

The moment you see her you know she is his apocalypse but they do such a good job flushing her character out. Maybe it's my own sickness but I enjoyed the Rita character more in season 01 I am sure they are painting her this way to justify Dexter leaning towards someone else. I think Tom said it best a couple episodes ago "I'm starting to not like Dexter". One thing the show does very well is make it so Dexter always has moments where you forget he is a monster. He spends the whole first season explaining Rita is a situational convenience more than a relationship... But then you see him with the kids or doing little chores for Rita and you believe there is more behind his "feelings". Deb is fantastic, the book paints her as quite the thin character who is just a potty mouthed, daughter of a cop but man does Jennifer Carpenter absolutely kill it in this role. She wears this vulnerability on her face better than any actress I can recall. Her uncertainty is clear from the get go. Laguirta's arc is there to remind us .. when the writers give you a warning.. there is a reason for it. They constantly said she was a political beast who would stop at nothing to get ahead .. and they made us believe in her... And what a rug pull. Doaks is probably the most like Dexter of anyone in the show. It's why he sees him. This show is great. And it hasn't hit it's pinnacle yet. Season 4 is... Just... Outstanding!

I have not laughed so hard in so long when I heard Tom start singing "i'm retaaaaarded" after hearing Debra say it. Oh geez this is so fun. Hope that fun little super laxative isn't taking you out too hard lmao.
