Public Playtest: Beastheart for Draw Steel

ROAR! The beastheart class is in PUBLIC playtesting now for Draw Steel! That's right, ANYONE can see this post!

Many folks remember when we released Beastheart and Monstrous Companions for fifth edition. Now that class is coming to Draw Steel, and it's better than ever!

The great Paul Hughes has created a more cinematic and heroic version of the class, which you can playtest right now for all levels of play! This is a totally new version of the hero and companion class built from the ground up for a totally new game. If you're familiar with the beastheart of fifth edition, we'd ask you to put any expectations you have from the old class aside and evaluate this one as a Draw Steel class.

The best way to get us your feedback is through the following survey:

The survey is now closed. Thank you for your feedback!

As a heads up, this hasn't yet been through editing. You'll likely find some typos and wording that could be a little more clear. You don't need to give us feedback on that. We have editors who will do it for us! You just let us know how it plays at your table and if it's fun or not.

Thank you so much for playtesting the beastheart!

Discord and Reddit

If you want to find a group to playtest or want to chat about the beastheart, head on over to the MCDM Discord. You can also explore the Draw Steel subreddit to discuss the game!

Thank you all so much for supporting MCDM and Draw Steel!

I know I’m late to the party on this one, but I’m so sad there’s no Feathers the Owlbear :( He was my favorite. Was hoping we’d still get the Orden version of an owlbear.

I know the survey is closed, but I JUST found out about the swallow mechanic. I'm a little bummed that it's gated behind the Guardian Wild Nature and not, say, in a rampage feature. Hoping it'll be expanded on in the full release

i know the survey is closed, but i do want to say that not being able to use other kits really feels kinda bad, it feels like something that heavily limits the class. the pdf justifies this by saying the companion cant fit into a suit of armor, but then gives you a kit that has heavy armor anyway. a more reasonable restriction, like saying the companion cant use the signature abilities of kits not listed on the class, would feel a lot less restricting

I don't think this idea necessitates an entire survey response, but this class desperately needs a big honey badger type animal. A dwarf and a Dire Badger, unstoppable defenders for their group. Fearless, tough as nails, one of the few creatures stout enough to earn the respect of the Elementals. I'm picturing stability 3 or 4. Maybe bleeding immunity like the boar, and a free-reaction charge toward any enemy that forced-moved it. And maybe the Intimidate skill and a taunt with strikes. There's lots of stories of badgers getting bitten by cobras and they just sleep it off and then eat the cobra. So maybe poison immunity, or hell, damage immunity at upper levels. Maybe even something like the Curse of Immortality or Guilty Conscious complication. I'm def making a female Dwarf named Hunny. Hunny/Badger don't give a F**k!!

I'm on record as not enjoying the kits, but I have to say that on the whole I love how customisable the class is, and how effectively the 50/50 turns work. That's a really effective way of always being a team. I can definitely see a world where one slightly over powered power would have you playing nothing but your pet, or nothing but your character. This is great.

Unchained Ferocity at 4th level is still referring to the previous instantiation of gaining ferocity. Presumably the damage trigger should go up to 4 per round? Or only 3?

Jonas Tintenseher

Shouldn't it be 'Furry' Advancement? jk

deadbob

Table title is "Fury Advancement"

Delightful. I have two players who have already called their next character as Beasthearts.

Gold to the masses! GOLD I SAY!!!

BalrogWhisperer

Splendid. I’m always a sucker for a pet class.
