Let your hands be the last one to hold her - come on guys, that is great dialogue. Emotional, impactful, fitting the scene and tone. Everything about this show is on this level and all the blockbuster shows with great ips behind them should take a close look what makes good writing. Mariko was probably the best overall, but I loved this scene with Fuji and I loved the scene with Buntaro fighting in the village, bowing to his Lord. I think my two most favorite scenes of the show. Many great ones, but those are my 2 favorites. Probably not everyones favorite show with how little action and the amount of japanese in it, but I liked it and quality can't be argued against. And I did love how they handled the translation/ translators in some scenes, artful trick to serve the audience.

Sekigahara did occur for the real person he is based upon. The 1980’s version tells you at the battle what happens to the fictional character Ishido. Buckle up, if you get season 2 then more chess occurs. History is insane to what happens with the Tokugawa era.

Also, since I haven't seen anyone mention this yet, this show was initially intended to be a limited series with a single season, but with the massive outpouring of praise and calls for more, the show writers got the permission/blessing of the authors family to continue and make another season or more despite the source material being wrapped up at the end of season 1. And as a nice little incentive, switching from "limited series" to "drama" allowed the show to win so many more awards at the Emmys, and deservedly so in my opinion.

One thing I really enjoyed about the finale that I'm not sure you guys caught was that when Yabushige called Toranaga out for being no better than every power hungry player in the game, and accused him of wanting the absolute power of "Shōgun" he initially replied with "why tell a dead man the future" (which in itself is a callback to a private conversation Yabu had earlier in the season, showing that Toranaga has been listening and pulling the strings the entire time) but in the final moment before beheading him, Toranaga gives the slightest of smirks to him as he swings the sword. In my mind this was brilliant writing, confirming subtly to Yabu and the audience that he does in fact desire the power of Shōgun and has been using every single person in his life as a pawn to get there. I think he has everyone fooled (including the audience) into believing that he's an honorable and reserved man, when in reality he's a master manipulator who will sacrifice everyone and everything to achieve absolute power, just like Ishido. Coming to the realization that Toranaga was just another snake in the grass (in my opinion) gave me chills. Amazing job by Hiroyuki Sonada for portraying such a complex character so masterfully.

Also don’t know how Cosmo Jarvis wasn’t nominated for this episode. Anna Sawai’s performance in episode 9 and his in episode 10 were masterclasses

The last two episodes always fuck me up 😂 cry every time I watch it. You can really feel the presence of Mariko in the last episode. The scene with John and Fuji sitting where all 3 of them use to sit overlooking the garden is beautiful. And her making a deal to save his life and end his war with the catholics. Also shows how much the priest loved Mariko as well to honor her wishes. The scenes of him as an old man, i see as actually more of a vision of what his life would have been like had he not changed. The version of him that he was when he first arrived that wanted to use Toranaga in his war against the Catholics. The more selfish version of himself, Mariko’s sacrifice got him to a realization that he didn’t want to be that person anymore. The scene where he takes Fuji out to sea to say goodbye to their loved ones is beautiful too, he does let go and say his goodbye to Mariko by dropping her cross in the water. Which shows him shutting the door on returning to England. I love Fuji saying the line Mariko said to her when she was holding her son “let your hands be the last to hold her” beautiful call back

i think the time jump might just be more of a dream state or a vision of his. like thats one path making his way back home clinging to the past. and i think when he got rid of her cross it was more of a choice for something else.

I concur!

This is probably as close to perfect a single season of television can get. There’s just so much to be stunned by. Fantastic reactions and analysis/commentary throughout the season; I loved rewatching this with you guys!
