Hero of the World of Time Fantasy

Greetings-- today's release is a fun one, especially if you're using Time Fantasy sprites!

This is a brand new hero character in the Time Fantasy style. He has four outfit variations with full walking animations and four emotion animations for each outfit.

There's a lot to talk about with this one, so first here are the downloads:

TF Overworld Project

All weekend, (and likely all this upcoming week), I've been working on finally putting together the ultimate Time Fantasy world map tileset. I've mentioned before that it was something that I'd eventually get to. It's time.

Note: I'm prioritizing this over the promised Elements set because I know projects are actively working with TF and I don't want to leave them hanging in favor of the new style-- this will be a proper conclusion and celebration of the Time Fantasy assets, and then 2025 going forward I'll continue with the next Elements tileset and character pieces expansions. Plus: the overworld will include the Elements color variant and will be useable for games in both styles, providing a foundation for future Elements tileset biomes.

This set will pull together all of the "new overworld" assets alongside other overworld assets that I've released on patreon (including tiles and vehicles).

Notably, it will also feature new tiles to represent any Time Fantasy expansion or biome that has yet to be represented in overworld tiles.

The world map tileset has been causing me a lot of headache-- I've lost a lot of time this weekend just trying to organize tiles: the problem is that there are too many of them!

I've decided that the only way to release this world map tileset will be as a master sheet of tiles in addition to a series of premade handcrafted image assets.

The object-layer tiles are no problem. That's the fun part. But the terrain tiles (A1-A5) , there are just too many to reasonably confine them to RM sheets: instead they will be organized in a master sheet. They'll be available in RM arrangements so you can you can easily make your own tilesets by mixing together the terrains that you need. I'll include a nicely labeled PSD file.

For things like animated coastlines, the best way to use these assets would be the old classic RM technique of "parallax mapping"-- so I realized that if I wanted to do this overworld map the right way, and make sure that it will really be useful to anybody who buys it, we'd have to take the extra step:

Overworld Sample Game

I'm going to release a sample game alongside this set. It will include a fully functional world map (with all the assets) and the game will have a short story that showcases some sample maps.

If you've ever played Don's Adventures (a sample game that came with RM2K's original English translation), you can think of it like that.

The primary purpose will be to provide a project template with collision database and tilesets imported and set up for the TF assets. This would be made in RPGMaker MZ.

And thus-- after spending all day wrestling with tiles and getting nowhere, I started thinking about what this sample project might look like --

World of Time Fantasy

I'm a huge fan of chain games as a fun creative activity. I've worked on a bunch of these over the years, including making the opening chapter of Buddy Boy.

The Time Fantasy sample game is going to be an open-ended first chapter.

Of course, devs are welcome to ignore it and just copy the assets and project template; but the game will be set up to encourage you to continue the story if you want, and build out the World of Time Fantasy with your own story and characters.

I imagine something like this: since we want to show off the world map, the player could do postal delivery and travels around the world delivering messages and packages between NPCs in different biomes. He could have an airship and travel the skies an open world...

Somehow I ended up spending all night making this brand new hero character!

And that's where today's sprite comes from.

Honestly-- I'm proud of this one. You can probably tell that I was really into it because he has the extra outfits and animations 🀣

I think he came out really good, and is a fantastic representative of the stylistic evolution and my growth as an artist throughout the years that we've been building up this Time Fantasy series.

I can't thank you enough for how important you've been for that, and I'm looking forward to more adventures!

So-- I had another idea to include patrons in building the sample game... what are your thoughts about this?

If anybody want to make a sample map or a few, maybe a village or a small biome, to build out the "World of Time Fantasy", we can include that in it when I release the set. You could include some NPCs or lore for your zone too, and have your own little piece of the sample game's "canon" world.

When my opening chapter ready in a beta state, we'll figure it out from there. It depends on if there is any interest in the idea.

I'd love you know what you think!

-------------------

That's a lot-- it's been a busy and productive week. I hope that this is useful and valuable to you.

I'll be back later in the week with something new. Maybe some more tiles for this project- or maybe something else from the request thread. Depends how much progress I can get done.

Okay! Thanks for everything!

Comments

These are some nice sprites! I don't think you used the TF base for these models right? They look a little smaller than the regular TF models. Was this meant to be this way?

Good catch! I might revisit this guy in the future with extra animations, so I'll make a reminder to fix it when I open him up again. Thank you!

The 4th version doesn't have his hat when laughing or was that intentional?
