Monster Monday 4: Wurm Dragon
Added 2024-06-24 15:59:01 +0000 UTCHello! It's time for the newest monster in our ongoing special event...

Today's monster is an important one in the ongoing evolution of enemy complexity. This Wurm Dragon may look simple-- but he stands out compared to the previous releases because of his multidirectional animations:

This enemy's animations come with two diagonal directions-- these directions can then be flipped to create full animations for multidirectional movement. This is a clever animation technique that is a common standard in many games today.
The previous enemies didn't need directional animations, but I knew that going forward, we'd need some more complex behaviors, especially when we get into unique attack animations. So we're starting off the next "tier" of enemies with this guy--
The Wurm Dragon has three animations-- a wiggling animation for idle and movement, an anticipation where he coils and opens his mouth, and then the strike itself where he lunges forward. Each of these animations comes with both south-diag and up-diag directional variants.
You can see how the animations come together in the gif above, or in the following: as with other enemies in this series, I put together an extended gameplay recording in video form--
I hope that you get a lot of use out of this enemy.

Reminder: Like my previous releases in this series, this sprite has more frames of animation than RPGMaker's default, so the frames are arranged vertically on the sheet. You'll need to animate it manually in the engine by changing the facing direction. Empty spaces on the sheets have colored squares to help you visualize the alignment for any re-organization you want to do.

And that's it for today! I'll be back later in the week with one more-- likely something small to finish off the month before the usual recap thread over the weekend.
See you soon. Thanks!

Aww..looks like something a kobold would keep as a pet/attack dog. Aestheticwise, these are made with Time Elements in mind, right?
